most television shows are paid for by advertising dollars, the rest is just gravy... and since it's licensed the "artits" have already received their "cut" so in reality the only person benefiting is the store you buy it from and the big man who sold it to the stores.
It may be a shit deal but the artist get their money one way or another, don't worry.

The amount of money going back to the original company is minimum at best
If you guy a dvd at a store. The store gets it's $25 but, in reality it only paid $20 for the dvd from the original company. The original company only took them $15 to make the dvd. So..the original company got it's $5 the store get it's $5 and you are out $25.
As Waar already said T.V. shoes are paid for by advertising dollars. Ever wonder why "24" has a bigger budget than NCIS? 24 is more popular thus more advertising dollars go to them which gives them a bigger budget.
