kicki: First of all, who's your commander?
Second, yes, the advice you were given is good. You want boardwipes over spot removal and late-game creatures because commander is a late-game format. There are still exceptions, though. If your colors support them, exile removal is still good (like Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares), in fact, its favorable, because there's lots of graveyard tricks people like using. You also want maindeck artifact or enchantment removal in case your opponents have something wacky you need to deal with (like my deck: mostly artifacts). And I'm not a big fan of counterspells in EDH, unless they're like Hinder, which can screw with your opponent.
My commander is Riku of Two Reflections. Aside from because he was in the box, I like his ability. Provided I have the mana, I can copy a lot of stuff.
I only have three counterspells. Plasm Capture, Spell Crumple and Dissipate. Four if you count Draining Whelk.
I'm thinking of adding Burning wish and removing Destructive Force. I think it is nice having an option to choose what boardwipe I should get. If I'm about to lose, might as well activate Apocalypse.
I also wanted to add Jhoira so I can suspend+board wipe, but I feel that it is kinda an overpowered and nut fun way to play.
Right now, the ones that I really wanted to add are Empress Galina, Dominus of Fealty,Sphinx Ambassador, Unexpected Results, Gather Specimens and Obliterate or Apocalypse. I really want to hard cast Ulamog then Obliterate everyone. That should be fair and fun.
Right now my deck is below.
Nucklavee
Draining Whelk
Rakka Mar
Animar, Soul of Elements
Kederekt Leviathan
Rapacious One
Primordial Hydra
Urabrask the Hidden

Its good you're thinking of your friends and making something fun, as opposed to powerful, lol. Some of the guys at my shop, despite being fun-loving guys, still have some pretty broken decks...
I'm actually not sure exactly how to fix up your deck, so I just have suggestions for additions that sound sweet:
I think that in your deck, since you care about your creatures more than other decks, you'd actually want less boardwipes, I think.
Hinder is a good counterspell in your deck. It's exactly like Spell Crumple, but with better art, lol. But having two of that effect is great, since you can counter their commander and down to the bottom of the deck it goes, ROFL.
Also, Spin into Myth and Void Stalker are good spot removal cards because they shuffle into deck rather than killing them, which is an excellent way to get rid of an opponent's commander.
Finally, Phyrexian Ingestor sounds perfect in a Riku deck: exile the two best creatures your opponents control, and get two gigantic killers.
In the end, its your call where you want to go with your deck, because commander is a casual format, and you just need to make it as fun as possible for yourself.
