I envy you angel. I can only wish I lived in sweden. My wife and I saw Opeth in may. They came with Three. It was the single best night of my life so far. If you haven't seen Opeth live before, all I can say is you're in for one hell of a treat. We also have recently had the pleasure to see Nightwish and Sonata Arctica lately (though I have to admit that's more her scene than mine).

In fact, in that genre of metal, pretty much everyone sang melodically. It wasn't really until bands like Megadeth and especially Slayer that the trend towards nontonal vocals picked up.

@WhiteLion I know from what it all started, but being a modern person from the late eighties and more of a ninety girl, I know the modern metal scene, not the antics. In most peoples ears REAL metal is the modern metal, death metal and such. And that's what I call REAL metal, the ones you mention are more hard-rock, rock in my ears.

You can't seriously say Black Sabbath isn't metal. They are the quintessential metal band.
A couple the bands mentioned here, like Nightwish, I would classify as at least as much pop as metal.
But I don't see why most of this stuff can't all be "REAL" metal, just in different styles and from different time periods.

Wow this thread is nearly a goner, but alas my words must be spoken.
I recently got into metal while watching Metalocalypse XD, then eventually started listening to Black Dahlia Murder, Older Trivium, and some Children of Bodom. I'm not too sure which genre of metal they fall in, but if you guys have an idea of what other bands I might like please do tell me ^^

Viking Metal isn't really a genre of metal, people have just begun to say "ooh, they're playing Viking metal!" because of bands like Amon Amarth, that sing about norse mythology.
