Macs pretty much are PCs. But, I've had way too many Mac users go our of their way to try to correct me when I call Mac, a PC. People see things differently and think Macs are way different then a PC. The problem lies in the fact that the don't know much about computers in the first place.
Mac and PC aren't very much different. They use Intel processors just like PCs. They even use the same graphic cards as PC. The insides is mostly the same. The main difference is the OS. Mac OS or Windows. You already know that you can install windows on your Mac via bootcamp. You can pretty much do the same vice verse for dual boot.
I don't hate Macs, but I would never get one because of their prices. For a $2k Mac, I can build 2-3 PC with the exact same specs or better. Macs are aimed for people who have money but don't know the differences between a Mac and a PC.

In short for people who don't like to read, the main difference between a Mac and a PC, is the OS. That is all. Both Macs and PC can use Windows and Mac OS. There are ways to do it. Just google it if you don't believe me.

The only internal difference between Mac and PC owners are, as what you said, the fact that PCs have motherboards and runs Windows, while Macs have Logic Boards and runs OSX.
It's not hard getting OSX to run on any PC besides the Mac, but that's breaking the EULA. I don't deny that Macs are more expensive, but after spending some time on OSX, I think that paying the "Apple Tax" was worth it, just for the software. I also think that Macs are beautiful machines to aesthetically as well (new 27" iMac is amazing, and the specs are awesome too), but that's not the main reason I'd shell out the extra money.
Obviously, not everyone agrees with me (most people don't). That's why there are more Windows users out there, no? We're all free to decide what is the most suitable for us. It's better to have choices than no choice at all.
P.S. My Mac has not crashed once since I bought it. But then again, it's all the software.

If a computer uses a normal motherboard, OSX is designed to reject it.

I've already seen the difference mucking about with a mate's 17" Dell XPS.
Mmm are there any reliability issues with the refurb units? Considering how cheap they are I might get one to replace the aging uni laptop.

1900x1200 very well be too high rez for 17". It doesn't bother me personally. Either way, a 1900x1200 17" LCD is obviously better than its 1440x900 counterpart and is worth considerably more money (especially since Macbooks are LED lit, rather than florescent).
As for reliability issues with Apple refurbs, there are none. Refurbished machines are typically indistinguishable from a new machine. I know my younger sister's refurb iPod Nano is identical to a brand new one. I've talked to a number of people who purchased a refurb Mac, and none of them had any complaints.

Hmm I've dealt with Apple with warranty issues and they're not bad at all.
Still having to send stuff out or put into warranty is annoying as you have a period of downtime.
