My taste in music has been questioned

My music folder on my computer has lots of tracks, mostly OSTs from various games. Some of my favorites are from games such as the Final Fantasy series and the Persona series. A friend looked in my music folder and called it lame and said this was because there was no real music on here such as you would hear on the radio. I do have some heavy metal and rock in my list but most of it comes from games. So is my taste in music bad?

First of all I think your friend needs to shut up. I respect the music tastes of my friends, in return they respect mine. Also music is a matter of tastes, and there are no specific rules on "which tastes are better" no matter what people may say, often others try to convince you that their taste is better but honestly I think people somewhat tend to flow along with popular tastes of music because it makes them feel like they're "part of the group". (of course this doesn't apply to everyone.)
It doesn't matter what kind of music you like, as long as you don't try to push your tastes onto others without them taking interest in it then I'd say your tastes should be respected.

Your friend probably says that because you don't have much mainstream music, chances are your friend has poor taste.
I wouldn't say you have bad taste in music, both Final Fantasy and Persona series have great tracks, wouldn't hurt to broaden your horizons though.

That 'friend' has no right to tell you what music you should like, and what not. I'm surprised you're even questioning that.

Whether anyone else likes it or not makes no difference to me, Im still going to listen to it.
What you like to listen to is what you should listen to, so dont worry if someone says the music you like to is something they dont. What you prefer is purely subjective so anything they say demeaning to it has no validity.

You should actually make fun of him for having so many songs that can be heard on the radio (if he really does). I call music I don't like lame all the time, you should do the same with his.

Although you might have limited attraction to other forms of music try listening to other genres/artists. Unless, you're like me who usually oppose other genres.
Last thing. Never listen to people who say you have shitty taste. To me, those people are narrow minded fools. Besides, I listen to NES music, hahaha.

everyone has their taste on musics...some love pop...some love rock...some love music from their favorite singer...and some love music which just been play by instruments such as orchestra...in your case...NO...it's fine if you listening to a music from video game, you're not alone...it's up to you to decide what you like, not your 'friend'...maybe your 'friend' have a little problem respecting your taste of music...go knock his/her head...8)

Different genres value different things in music. Serial music values mathematical complexity. The style gallant music valued that which was simple, yet clever and sentimental. Traditional overtures valued speed, flash. In some cases, the value of the music could be extramusical. I know some fans of punk music who think the music itself is actually not very good but value the culture of punk fanship.
Attempting to evaluation music of one genre using the value standards of another genre will generally indicate the music is bad. By the standards of serial music, Beethoven wasn't a very good composer. Seems to me that your friend is evaluating your music by the value set he associates with his music.
Of course, if he values things like radio play, he doesn't have to like your music. However, the idea of not liking a piece of music but being able to respect that is has value is usually associated with the idea of recognizing that the music does appeal to values, just ones other than those one finds important.
The question of what makes music "good" in a universal sense is not an easy question to deal with. Providing a well defined answer assumes that there are certain well defined values that are universally positive in music and others that are universally negative. Even citing certain pieces that almost everyone respects as great(e.g. J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion) overlooks all the factors that went into writing the history of music that we have now. Having a strong societal mythos and history books that tell us which music is supposed to be great is of course going to affect which music we think is great, and many of the alternative viewpoints that existed at various stages in time have died out or are neglected.

There's no one who can say your taste in music is bad. There are so many types of music is because it appeals to different people. There is no bad taste when it comes to music.

Arguing about tastes of music is just like splitting grains of rice. Too much effort is wasted.
I usually don't care too much what people think about my tastes of music, as long as they don't try to force their style of music on me. If they do, I politely ask them to try to open their mind to different kinds of music, if not, they should keep quiet about my tastes.

People are just stupid. Do this: Make them listen to an epic song, then make them admit its epic, and then tell them it comes from a game. Likely as not, they'll just say "...Ah man, i thought this was music..." and go away.

People should not think so much in genres, it's so stupid. I did it too when I was younger, I had periods of different kinds metal, rock, synth, electronica, classical... I've listened to a lot of different kinds of music and realized that; I don't listen to a genre with good music, I listen to good music, no matter what the genre is. I just like bands with an original and unique sound.
A lot of OP, ED and soundtracks from anime and games is awesome, so no, the idiotic one with bad taste in music is probably your friend.
