White Knights

Alright fakku, due to recent events (like my thread getting moved) and questions Ive received on the subject I decided to put this topic up to the community. What do you think about white knights fakku? Just so we are clear a white knight is a user who takes it upon themselves to defend another user (most likely female) with aggressive, fanatical zeal which bares many similarities to Christianity during the crusades (why i often refer to them). They often do such a thing to influence the defended into thinking favorably of them. In the case of many females the male users will do so to attempt form a new bond or relationship with said female. The problem with this situation is that white knights often forget to use logic when approaching these situations, and attempt to simply mass numbers against anyone they believe to be an enemy. Trolls or black knights (thank you rbz) often act as a catalyst for white knights and do whatever they can to antagonize these pious users into fits of rage.

I'd like to hear what your opinion of white knights are. Do you respect anyone who stand up for another user? Do they entertain you? Do you think they're a waste of forum space? Please feel free to elaborate on any point you wish to make that is related to white knights. If you also have anything to say about black knights I would like to hear it.

Inb4 no females on the internet. I also would like to point out that most likely people who are white knights themselves will post how such a thing is pointless and unnecessary, the sheep in wolfs clothing so to speak.

I think they're idiots, but I wouldn't call them a waste of space since every once in a while, hilarity will ensue between a WK and a BK.

Personally, I think that most people do it for one of the following:

1) for teh lulz

2) for this thread.

3) to make themselves feel good knowing that a girl out there somewhere has some respect for them.


also, fighting on the internet is for teh lulz of the audience, there is never any gain except making yourself hated by another user.

Hard to say. Do you really fault someone for doing something good despite their ulterior motives? Of course, they could do so poorly that they end up causing more grief the person they are trying to defend than good.

I don't know. I have trouble faulting them for that. Probably because I used to do it a lot, and on rare ocassions still do. Not because I want to "get into a girls pants" but just any person that I tend to like. I was also one of the ones that usually ended up doing more harm than good.

Doing it to try and impress the opposite sex is pretty shallow, but what is an attempt and human nobility is still recognizable.

Idiots? Maybe. Do I laugh at them? Sometimes.

But I don't really have a clear opinion on them.

WK Syndrome...Meh? I feel entirely neutral to the idea. I'm willing to bet that the WK population is effectively only half of what one would think. Invariably, half of WKS are actually uber trolls that invested points in the "Charming Troll" perk.

Chivalry as it is has always happened for the sake of a woman. Also if you think about alot of wars happened cause of a woman, best example Troy. XD

White Knights + Black Knights + Girl in Distress + The fact that it's on the net = Necessary ingredients for forum drama =P

That was technically over an insult, and it had nothing to do with chivalry

also, chilvalry even from before the medieval times, was focussed on loyalty and honor. respect for women was one of the codes, but only one.

I have been labelled as one by Waar before, though Im not sure if waar was serious or jsut having a good laugh. I think all I said was something like "I think thats out of line" to a negative comment made to a person who looks like a woman. I dont see 'with aggressive, fanatical zeal' there. I mean just an example for the sake of discussion

I dont think I defend people coz I want their favor, I mean at times I dont even like em, I think I do it just for myself. And of course, for a good laugh too at times, I mean who says its just the black knights who can have fun

But there are of course times, when people do act like total assholes and I dont see anything wrong with telling them they are like assholes seriously. Its not a crime to say something is cool if it is, how come the other way around is not

But is it really always over females? Sometimes when one sees another being wrongly harassed (in your point of view) they may step up to "protect" them. So, perhaps in some instances, this white knight thing is actually done for something other than expecting favor in the protected's point of view

I'm too apathetic to be a white knight. Can't there be a gray category? For someone who respects women but still asks his lady friends for nudes every so often?

I believe you missed the most important part of the nickname, White Knight. Knights originated from the Middle Ages and followed the code of Chivalry compelling the Knights to uphold their value as a gentlemen. So Silverc is quite correct on this issue.
