[Locked] Anime Fans = ''Losers'' of society?

It seems as if anime fans get a lot of hate nowadays. I don't mind that people don't like anime because everybody has an opinion but it seems really hard to have conversations with people today about Anime of stuff like this. The moment i ask ''Do you like anime?'' 90% of the time the response is ''Why do you watch stuff like that..?'' or ''Anime fans are just losers''. One the forum i am apart of, there are new users who join and say they are anime fans and then a couple of people immediately launch a personal attack on them.

One of my good friends was an anime fan, but then a few months later he completely changed his opinion on it and started hating on the fans of it most likely because it was the 'cool thing to do'. We all know anime has it's problems but there is no reason for the hatred the fans get and the stereotype they always fall into.

There is an Ex-WWE wrestler who goes by the name of 'MVP' (currently wrestling in japan promotions) and is pretty successful, but guess what? He's a big anime fan himself. So it's pretty obvious that the claim that all anime fans are ''social degenerates'' is very false.

It goes back to my thread about virginity, people seem to think that if you do this you're considered normal and if you think or do otherwise 'you're a loser'. When people talk about porn all the time, i gladly say that porn sucks and i prefer hentai more and i get shitted on for it but i couldn't care less. I'm a proud to be an anime fan or an 'Otaku' for lack of a better term. I've been an anime fan all of my life and there is not a thing anyone can do to stop me from something that is my passion and is practically a lifestyle to me.

So i'm not sure how getting piss drunk at clubs, fucking yourself up on drugs and having sex with random women you barely know can be considered normal yet doing something as harmless as being a fan of a certain type of show or genre is such a bad thing.

I apologize for my rambling because this is something I've been meaning to get off my chest for quite sometime now.

Hmm to be honest I kinda get that point as I myself experienced that. I mean here in my place some people even associate anime with cartoons(the kiddy ones), not that its bad though. Anyway I still believe there are a lot of people who appreciate anime which are living in society with a rather nice living. I myself am a nurse and yeah I love anime much and I do see some of my patients who is into anime and they usually got shocked when I know the title of the anime they are watching. I think we anime fans are not losers we just appreciate it like an art but yeah indeed "WE" appreciate anime "SOME" dont. Society is like that there is this and that. But yeah its indeed quite true, here in my place most people dislike anime. I don't want to be a hypocrite and say things like "I don't care" its them and that coz I do feel a tad bit hurt sometimes especially when I felt rejection/alienated but yeah got to accept reality.

Because True Americans dislike anything that isn't American. It's surprising how true it is.

To many americans (not just americans, but americans are particularly bad, compared to the japanese or most asians for that matter), cartoons=for kids. So, if you like cartoons, and you're an adult, then you're an immature twat. About the only cartoons acceptable for adult americans to enjoy is stuff like Simpsons, american dad, family guy, South Park, and similar shows. You like cartoons other than those, or, god forbid, japanese animu, then you're a loser.

I have to say I have been wondering this for a while but the sad fact is that mainly it's because of these reasons:
1.It's Animation and for some reason that makes it bad
2. All of the anime stereotypes
3. It's not American so Americans don't like it
4. People just go with the crowd. It's likely that someone who thinks Anime is for nerds is told by someone else

There are a lot more but I don't have all night to put them down, but I put the ones that came to my mind. It's basically most people are given the wrong idea about anime at first and mostly the only ones who like it are the ones who weren't told it was stupid or other stuff before they got to watch their whole life. I guess you can say that a great percentage of the hate for anime just comes from others influence.

This is one reason universities generally don't give a crap if you have anime-style drawing in your portfolio....(from what i hear)
I suppose the concept is hard for many people to swallow i guess...

Although, for some reason, this such thing doesn't seem to receive a lot of discrimination around my area, it may be because of the high concentration of asians, but after seeing thread after thread of anger over discrimination for this reason, i'm beginning to feel slightly afraid about leaving this nice vacuum i live in.

Contemporary anime has been around the world for over 30 years, yet people still hate on those who enjoy artistic animation? I don't get it. Is it because anime is Japanese in nature, or is the statement influenced by American capitalism and consumerism?

Now, I know for a fact that I am not the only one who is witnessing this. True Americans (or All-Americans) turning their backs on other countries (Japan being one of the many) because they just don't care. And for what reasons? If America despises Japan because of what happened during WWII, I can sort of understand. Now it just seems like a pathetic movement of reasons for Americans to hate Japan. This is my honest opinion anyway.

What i'm saying is that if you hate Japan because of their entertainment industry, then that is probably the most pathetic thing I have ever heard. Hating on them because of the Pearl Harbor bombings is one thing, but hating on them because of anime distribution is very weak.

You guys don't have to agree with me on this, but I was just making a possible comparison of why Americans truly hate Japan.

Anyways, I am not one of those Americans...

For starters, Japan has rather advanced technology compared to America. (This is possibly because since Japan cannot have an army, they only have a self-defense force, and the funds that should be going to the army is redirected into technology and economy instead.) Japan also has a, more or less, better economy than the US.

It's a cultural threat thing, for anything that comes from outside of America will be treated poorly. People hate drastic change and anything that isn't within the security blanket.

People who are weak and fear rejection will succumb to accepting whatever their native cultural desires are, while dismissing the rest. Those who wish to take a stand will be chastised by the "normal ones". It goes back into the primitive days even. The ones who wish to be different will become social outcasts for not falling the tribe's wishes. It is a form of exile.

As time passes though, more and more people are trying to outreach towards true cultural diversity. For now though, it will sadly be something people will have to tolerate and ignore from the harsh close-minded critics.

Even with video games, the ones that aren't "Call of Duty" but are JRPGs bring forth damnation by most. I'm not a big anime fan, but Japanese style video games have drawn my interest. I do feel the need to play them in secrecy in order to avoid negative ridicule, for I have yet to meet such open-minded friends. Sad to say.

In my art class the teacher was refusing any work done in anime-style because it was considered a "cliché" which is not considered as art ... (must be the same reason for universities)

It's mainly American ignorance of other cultures. Also some of my friends get anime and hentai mixed up. It's like mixing up movies and porn. So every time I talk about anime they say I really don't want to hear about that it's nasty it's nasty or I hear anime is stupid. Well at least most of it is better than the animated shows in America.

Why is a stereotype ever a stereotype, people? People may be intolerant or ignorant, but honestly, that isn't the core reason, is it?

Well I believe anime is sort of looked down upon because it is foreign, or the fact that it could be mistaken for cartoons which are more childish. But even so, hating some one on their opinion annoys me. Because they are doing nothing to you, but you act like you have a duty to criticize them. It is like racism in a way, just hear me out on this. Because they are different in some way that is not socially normal, they criticize them for it. In that way it is like racism.

I remember a few of my classmates worrying about their roommates and one of my friends said to them "Hey it could be worse, she could have been watching Anime" And I asked him what he meant by that because anime is Pokemon and DBZ in our group. He was thinking of hentai.

Sounds like ignorance to me. Honestly I don't like the cartoons that are being shown today here in the united states. I grew up liking the anime shows from tonami. That's how my love for anime began, that's when my dislike for American cartoons began as well. Honestly I don't care if anybody might point their fingers at me for it. That's their view and in my opinion their loss since they've let their own pride and prejudice betray them.

Trust me, anime is not the only thing that is under attack from the 'AMERICANOS'.

I started watching anime (dragonball, mado king granzort) since I was 4 (I couldn't tell the difference), but it was only when Naruto entered my field of vision that I truly started to veer towards anime as a whole. For a while I thought that American cartoons sucked ass when put against an anime, but then I realized this: BOTH HAVE THEIR PROS AND CONS. It seems that most Americans are too pigeon-holed to notice that. And they call anime fans cave dwellers.. lol.

Come to think of it, if you look at it from an outsider's perspective:

Non-American (Asian, in this example): "Superbowl? What's that? Do you put ingredients in it and wait for the magic to happen?"
"Cartoons? You don't call it a cartoon, idiot! It's anime!"
"Drag racing is for musclehead pussies (no offense, this is just an example.)! Go drift in the mountainside and we'll talk."

They might shun or reject anime in their proud culture, but they can't force-feed their pride and joy onto us. I mean, over here we even have no idea what the Superbowl is (except for a few Internet-trotting and curious minds). Well, you'd get my point.
