"I am a huge movie fan." How does this sound to you? We all watch movies, don't we? But that guy, he must be someone who has all the DVDs, collects figurines, and watched his favourite movies 20+ times. As an average person, I am not that much into movies, so I will probably avoid him, since we will barely have something to talk about.
1. Communication:
I have always admitted to like Anime, and never received a negative reaction. I don't watch Anime for the sake of Anime, I just recognize it as the superior form of motion picture entertainment. Beeing obsessed with seemingly insignificant things like Anime, movies, cars, philately, or w.e., will always earn you a negative reaction. And if you bring it up as the first thing in a conversation, it proves you are not interested in talking about anything else apart from this - which obviously will never work if the interest is not mutual.
2. Stereotype(?):
Tegumi wrote...
Why is a stereotype ever a stereotype, people? People may be intolerant or ignorant, but honestly, that isn't the core reason, is it?
To counter the explicit stereotype argument; Anime as such has a rather high popularity with intellectual people. You will barely find a graphic designer or digital artist who hasn't heard of Akira. And what open minded person would, looking back on his childhood, not admit that series like Pokemon and Dragonball gave us a lot of pleasure?
3. Personality:
The WWE-wrestler who was a fan of Anime, wasn't he first and foremost a wrestler? Didn't he spend a lot of time and effort with improving his physique and acting skills? This is what people respect him for. As you can see, ultimately everything depends on your personality. So lets please not bitch about how Anime victimizes anybody, because it doesn't.
