It has nothing to do with Americans hating anything that isn't American. Its the idea that people become reclusive, and only allow certain things to influence them. Allowing something as trivial as anime interfere with real life experiences. Like a "Forced autism" - credit Hideaki Anno. And Sadly it is often the impetus for anime fans to be referred to as: husks, anti-social, socially awkward etc Simply because of the premise that Anime fans only care about Anime.

You've missed my point, I'm simply stating that there is a stereotype in our society regarding the "otaku lifestyle", in rare cases it is true, but generalizing an entire fan-base on a few rare cases is the way things happen these days.

I guess there is always a stigma attached these sort of things, hobbies or interests which put you in a niche.
But i guess anime fans, gamers, wwe fans, are often refereed to as losers only if taken to the extreme.. like a casual anime fan will not necessarily be referred to as a loser but an otaku will... i think its about extremes and how you portray yourself (and what anime you like, hahaha).. i think thats more the case..
Then again these labels are what they are.. labels. I dont think anime fans would refer to themselves as the "losers of society", but others might.. and for them to do that is very narrow minded and shallow.
But i guess anime fans, gamers, wwe fans, are often refereed to as losers only if taken to the extreme.. like a casual anime fan will not necessarily be referred to as a loser but an otaku will... i think its about extremes and how you portray yourself (and what anime you like, hahaha).. i think thats more the case..

In where i live, anime isn't widely know. I only found out about it in the morning cartoons. Digimon season 1 and 2. I fristly thought it was american product or smthing (i was 7 years old, so i was stupid one). I found more about anime when i was 16 years old. But who cares about that.
Anyway, last year autumn, near the middle of November i think, i met a guy who was ofc ridiculed because hw watched anime. having a past that was with bulling and now life sign of not taking much crap, I went to aid the fella. Funny thing is that i wasnt only one who was thinking the same lines. There were 6 of us, so we pretty much ganged the bully and introduced him dumpster diving. After that i found out that those 6 guys were also anime watchers. 1 was skateboarder, second liked basketball, another played piano. Anyway, i got 7 new friends who watch anime.
But the point is, people are afraid of unknown. They dont know what to expext from it. Hell even my mom thinks im immature because i watch anime. Some people just refuse to understand the concept and just use the concept that they build up by listening others or using his own incomplete knowledge. That stuff seriously needs to go.

This is a sad true... Normaly people associate anime to cartoons, and most of cartoon industries have children as the main audience. So, by that logic, if you watch anime, you are imature. At lest that's what most of people think... But that's just WRONG!

3- Content: In anime we have content for kids, teens, adults... everyone! In cartoons there is only content for kids (excepting simpsons, family guy and that kind of stuff).
And thoose are just some of the diferences between anime and cartoon.

So i'm not sure how getting piss drunk at clubs, fucking yourself up on drugs and having sex with random women you barely know can be considered normal yet doing something as harmless as being a fan of a certain type of show or genre is such a bad thing.
I apologize for my rambling because this is something I've been meaning to get off my chest for quite sometime now.

Put your perception on normal is twisted. drinking doing drugs and fucking random women isn't normal that's society take on living life to the fullest.normal is unexplainable but it's contradictional since abnormal can easily be explained and identified. if your going around saying hentai is better than porn and wondering why everyone shits on you is because Hentai is 2-d unmoving drawn porn or animated drawn porn. While regular porn is moving real life people. Yeah... When I said cartoons I was talking about the american ones, the famous ones (excluding some of the Disney animations) such as SpongeBob, Phineas and Ferb or the Failry Oddparents. Because in this war "cartoons vs anime" most of people refer as "cartoons" the american animation. If we talk about "cartoon" in this discussion as every animated serie, there wouldn't be any discussion at all... there is a huge amout of countrys with theis own animated series, with theis own caracteristics. So I think in this discussion, "cartoons" are the american cartoons, the ones we've raised with.
One more thong to keep in mind: the exemples I used are recent and popular american and japanese animations.
In animation, the recent anime have more detail than most of the famous american cartoons, excluding Disney movies and some others (I just forgot to write that). Sure Doraemon (and many others) look simple and doesn't have much detail, but I'm talking about the recent animations... And the most famous and recent animes do have a lot of detail.
About variety and the content, yeah, you are right... Actually I didn't really think about that so I just said what came to my mind at that moment and I forgot to think about other cartoons to have as exemples.
But anyway, the mais ideia I wanted to tell you is

Well, believe it or not, not once have I been insulted for being an anime fan at my senior years in high school or at uni. I've been more accepted and treated equally when I'm around, some of course have expressed dislike on anime, but they've never insulted me once, even if I told them I like it. (then again, In one way or another, we'd fine something in common we like so we get along pretty well).

A major part is the whole "Otaku" image. Most people have never heard the term but do picture anime fans as fat nerds fapping their lttle dicks to either a short broad asian girl, or some woman with outrageously big boobs. To top things off, they believe that they're unemployed, live in their mother's basement, and 40 year-old virgins. It's amazing what people cam believe. Luckily for me, most of the people I know do read manga, but I do know the kinds you speak of.

Part of it is censoring abroad. They want to 'censor' anime while they can't censor profanity. Profanity is good, Sexuality is bad. Sounds strange but on the streets, you can't report someone for cussing, but you can report them for indecent exposure, even in their own home. A link

What's so wrong with being an otaku? I'm a proud otaku with a glasses fetish who is a bit of a lolicon who works part time as a figurine sculptor and is on my last year on my animation course, everyone in my class says I'm badass , asks help for their homework, Girls try to flirt with me all the time plus my sister says that a few of her classmates have a crush on me but I'm not interested, a proud oniichan to 2 brothers and a sister, my entire family loves me despite the growing feud between the two sides. And when someone tries to screw anime I just say " I DON'T GIVE A FREAKIN DAMN WHAT YOU SAY I LOVE ANIME!!
