[Locked] Good Grammar and Spelling

Honestly, the level of dyslexia on this forum is startling. I am here to educate those of you who truly need it. Many of you want to be taken seriously, and the first step towards that is being understood. Now, let the lesson begin. 1. Correct Spelling Spelling is very important. If you can't spell a word correctly, people are not going to be able to understand you, and that doesn't help when you are asking a question. Now, I play a lot of MMORPGs, and when people come up to me with questions, they always say plz. I suppose they say plz because it is shorter than please. I say no because it is shorter than yes. Once you get used to typing, it won't matter how long the word is. If you can type fast, all you have to worry about is spelling, punctuation, and good grammar. 2. Punctuation Punctuation can make all the difference in typing. Many people refuse to use periods when they type out paragraphs. This not only creates a massive run-on sentence, but it makes you look retarded as well. Also, separate items in a list with commas. i.e. I need to get eggs, milk, and butter. If your list contains separate sections with commas in them, use semicolons. i.e. I need to go to the mall to get clothes, shoes, and a new tie; go pick up lunch for Jacob, Nikon, and Azumax; and find the download links for episodes 5, 6, and 7. 3. Grammar When speaking, (or typing for that matter) it is important to follow the basic rules of grammar. This includes making sure that when referring to yourself and another as a group, it looks like this: i.e. Minsc and I developed the guidelines of Fakkumon. Also, make sure that you use the proper forms of the various articles. Articles are the words the, a, and an. You use a when the next word in the sentence starts with a vowel sound. Not necessarily a vowel, as y is occasionally considered a vowel, and words like yacht don't start with a vowel sound. Example: i.e. Don't forget to find a decent seat. i.e. I ate an apple for a snack. The forms of the can be confusing for ESLs. ESL stands for English as a Second Language, and is my term for anyone attempting to learn to speak English as, well, their second language. The forms of the are the, those, that, they, and them. The is used when talking about a noun. Those is used when talking about multiple nouns. That can be used in place of the most of the time, but is generally used when trying to give direction to a sentence. They is used when telling about a group of people. It is not to be used in the same sentence that you actually list the people in. Them is also used when talking about a group of people, but used at the end of an action, rather than at the beginning. Examples: i.e. The car was impounded. i.e. Those apples belong to Nikon. i.e. That car is horribly slow. i.e. They were unable to locate the Main Screen. i.e. The auto-turrets began to fire at them. Another important part of grammar is being able to tell when to use then, and when to use than. Then is used when talking about time. Than is used when comparing two things. Examples: i.e. We have to go to the store first, but then we can go to the bank. i.e. This pencil is much more dense than that pen. MORE TO COME

I really don't see why we need to have good grammar/spelling on something as casual as a forum, as long as it's still legible. I mean, if it's not totally broken and indecipherable it's fine isn't it? We're not writing some report or college paper...

Good grammar shows you're mature, everyone here is over eighteen, right? If you use good grammar, if you use punctuation, it shows you're mature. Granted this is a forum for a hentai site, so it's not like you have to be some overbearing, humorless stuffed shirt. But for Christ's sake, you can still have fun and crack jokes with proper grammar, and the best part is, everyone can understand you! I mean, if everyone is the age they say they are, you're probably in high school or college, and that means you must be able to speak and write properly, right?

This isn't a bunch of people text-messaging each other on cell phones, nor is this an online game, it doesn't take much to try and spell properly. I may be new here, but I don't like giving myself a brain aneurysm trying to understand some of you, and get this, if you overly use crappy catchphrases and abbreviations, it makes people not take you seriously. You may be a jokester 99% of the time you post here, but if you post something along the lines of "hay guyz so-and-so happnd to me im so sad :((((((" people might not pay attention to you when you want them to.

Maybe what I say should be lax in some forums, in Incoherent Babbling, for example, the namesake tells you you don't have to make sense. However, in say, the Serious Discussion forum you should try and show you can spell. I mean, the seriousness shouldn't only apply to topics, should it?

A good portion of the forum users are probably between 14-17 and an even larger amount of this site's traffic is from people that age. Hentai attracts lots of under age people.

That's the thing about internet. Sexual material is far more accessible to minors on the internet than on, let's say, media such as magazine publications and DVDs. I'm actually the opposite; I actually despised hentai when I was underage, but as I grew older I came to like it; the tradeoff was that I began to dislike real porn. That stuff is too... animalistic? I suppose.

As for good or bad grammar... I have to say I don't really mind. As long as they're not being stupid on purpose I suppose.

There are people who are very mature but, because English is not their first language or some similar reason, they are unable to use the flawless English you guys advocate.

Wow...I thought thing thread was dead. Look, depending on who you are you write differently. Whether you type in total 1337 or you type like an English master, its all up to you. If you don't like how people write...then get the hell off of forums. People do whatever they want most of the time, you can't control anyone-especially on forums such as these. So, I'm not sure if I already went ranting like this before, you will have to put up with other peoples way of writing one way or another.
So if I want to type in 707@1 1337, 7|-|3/\/ | 5|-|@11...
And really, this is an old topic. Why would you bring this back up...now Noutakun will be on here -_-...

I agree with good grammar in general, but for most of these threads, it's not really necessary eh? Anyway, language is always evolving, keep pace or fall behind!

As an English major, I find myself naturally attracted to correct people in the nicest manner possible (as compared to the usually sarcastic and berating manner of others). But one has to take into account the idea that some people see the internet as a way of escaping reality and likewise, speech. Why do you think l33t became so popular? It's the technological generation's shorthand. Have a full conversation with another person in a different part of the country speaking (typing) as little as possible, but still getting the point across in a single inflected abbreviation. They are being taken seriously, the problem is that some people take things too seriously in forums and online in general (on both ends of the spectrum).
So to all the grammar nazis out there: LIGHTEN UP. THE WAR IS OVER, YOU LOSE.
