Is religion worth fighting for?

Although I was baptized as a Roman Catholic, it will never bend my sense of philosophy and judgment. Seeing how religion has, at first, brought great changes (which were mostly beneficial), it suddenly becomes this virus that gnaws at the world even at this moment.
I don't want to even go to the many points of history, both triumphant and tragic, done in the name of religion, but I believe you guys get my point. I don't know about other religions, but there are so many hypocrite Christians, it makes me sick. Governments and people bent to their will to run things around roughshod... I can already hear history repeating itself.
I want to break free of this system of corruption and decay, but the moment I defy the system, I become labeled a heretic and undesirable in the eyes of Christians, and I can't afford that, living in a nation with a predominant Christian populace.
So, give me an answer... is religion really worth fighting for?

The price of ANY faith means loneyness and pain.
To fight when your alone holding a bible like in the movie JUDGE DREAD make no sense.
My advice is the follow your faith in the shadows and pray the devil isnt there.

Belief can be the core of any person's mental stability. Those who have faith are very much willing to fight for it, but when it comes down to breaking the center of their beliefs you can really see how much a person is willing to cling onto their core. When you look at it in this perspective, you should then consider the religious wars in the past, most obviously the crusades- bearing in mind it was a combination of both the human nature of greed as well as faith and belief. As long as there is religion, or for that matter something people place their faith, the value of their loyalty into, there'll be those willing to fight for it, and very much so, die for it.
Personally, I'm a deist and I find the concept of religion faulty at best, and believe me I think far less of it. There are still things I'm willing to fight for, and again, die for, as I'm sure there are for others. OP, you should consider what you believe in for certain to begin with, and know that no matter what the roots of your reasoning and faith is, there'll always be those whaling you for it, it's just the nature of belief.
Just my two cents, don't take it to heart, and I'll pardon myself if I offended anyone.

Au contraire, many people have gotten together on different occasions because of faith. However, I ain't one of those people.

As a Catholic, I still believe in the Lord, but knowing that there are people shameless enough to use His name for profit and power, there comes the time when I ponder, "Should I still fight for my religion and my beliefs when there are people who turn to power-hungry crocodiles and madmen because of this religion?" I am also worried that religion might influence and bend my freedom and thinking, so there are times that I ask myself this question (the title).

Religion has the power to influence, that's something you cannot change. I suggest you study the perspectives of those outside of your religion, or religion entirely for that matter. Educating yourself the same as you've read the bible is humbling, and one of the best ways to endorse yourself with a pool of knowledge that can provide you some sense of humility in your faith. Corruption is rife wherever humans are, as a religious person I would expect one to tell you that they are not true people of the good lord, but I am not and I can't say that to you. Regardless, for you to truly know what it is you want to believe in, there's nothing else for you to do than immerse yourself in the beliefs of others, so you know that in the end, yours is truly your own. I hope that made sense, and in the end I'm only trying to answer you from a psychological perspective and one of a person that isn't very faithful or loyal to anyone. Holla and respect.

Everything written below is opinion, can't be bothered to write it out that way though. take it with a grain of salt.
The idea of religion is based on hope. Death is a scary thing, and people want the reassurance that their lives weren't meaningless, and they would get rewarded for their efforts. Religion is faith, and faith is part of humanity. Thats why your never going to get rid of it, or at the very least, not anytime soon.
People 'believing' in science is a stupid idea, because science is not nearly a complete resource. Sure, theres the big bang, but what before then? and before then? and it goes on. not to mention the fact people want to believe they are living for a reason, and that there aren't many people who are able to accept the meaningless nature of a human life. Athiesm as it is now is simply people not wanting to believe in something that is possibly (or probably) fiction.
I believe that when (or if) science becomes 'complete', and all the mysteries of creation are known, religion will become a thing of the past.
Religion isn't the cause of wars or terrorism, humans are. As long as we are different, we will have 'reason' to fight. Islamic extremists use the quran as an excuse for killing (wrongly btw, they ignore 99% of the teachings in the book) and religious wars are fought because we are selfish and always think of ourselves as correct until proven wrong, which in the case of religion is very difficult to do.
For all we know atm, there is actually a god, and all athiests are arrogant bastards.

Considering I'm a special case (A Catholic who doesn't agree with the Pope most of the time, and reads the Hebrew text for the Old Testament, and a Hebrew translation of the New Testament,) and that science does not confluct with my beliefs (The world was formed from the Big Bang and existed in chaos until Yahweh came and fixed it.) I do think that it is worth fighting for.
"Freedom of religion" tends to equal "Atheists Only" here in the U.S.;folks whining and suing every time they find something religious in any location.
If I'm not allowed to persecute folks for their beliefs, then they can't persecute me for mine.

My personal opinion..no. Because I feel that while there might be a higher power, nobody has it right. I'm not a believer in the fact that any deity/deities that exist are callous and pious enough to care what happens on one insignificant rock in the universe. While I understand that omniscience would make this possible, I fail to find a reason why they WOULD care. A handful of worshipers (a handful in the grand scale of the universe, that is) would hardly attract the attention when there is possibly a much more grand scale that things operate on. For all we know, said deity/deities could merely be what we humans are to our surroundings. We are like gods to an insect, no? Perhaps our gods are insects to other higher powers?

I just said that in that particular case, religion is the one that's giving them a reason to fight. Do I believe that in some point in time they would find another reason? then yes. But I only said that THAT particular war wouldn't have happened, I didn't say anything about a war that might or might not have taken its place.
And We got off track there as for my answer to the topic question, of course I would say no. I don't claim to be an expert in any religion, since I don't believe in God and all that stuff but I did go to a catholic university and I picked up a bit about it especially the one commandment about killing. Think about it you will kill people for the religion that tells you not to kill? makes absolutely no sense to me...
