Is religion worth fighting for?

Nothing in this world is worth fighting or dieing over, but that is just my opinion.

Religion is not worth dying for nor fighting for even if you believe in it with your heart and soul. Having faith and believing in something is not always beneficial to a human. For example, Hitler's troops firmly believed in what they were doing was right and for their religious beliefs but in the end their beliefs lead to their downfall. The point I am trying to make here is that

Humans that believe in religion for sense of purpose are weak
Humans that believe in themselves are strong.

As someone who doesn't participate in organized religion, I have to say no.

Religion is one of those things in society that provides a massive motivation. Without religion, sure there would be less conflict among those disagreeing in the interpretation of a biblical text, etc; but on the other hand, it gives people hope. A poor man with nothing in the world can be comforted by his faith. Religion is what has made human society survive as long as it has. Granted, it brings out the worst in some people, but in others, it bring out the best. As with every other aspect of human nature, faith has it's up sides and downsides. Many have fought and died for it (and I would too) but it gives the masses something to aspire to. Without motivation, people tend to waste their lives....

As a Christian, I would gladly defend and die for my faith, should something come along that suppresses it. My faith is what makes me.... me. Christianity is the bedrock that built the foundations of the Western World and I believe that compassion and understanding should be taught above all else. But if someone where to try and take away or suppress my beliefs.... Nothin' Doin'

Yes. Religion is something people should die for. Religion is rampant in poorer countries, where people have less to depend on and depend on Religion.
This, in turns allows for civil war and fights over Religion. This is a good thing, as it is a brutal form of population control put in place by man's nature.

Religion is also a especially great way to make money, harvest pedophile priests, and spread propaganda at a massive scale, easily and effectively. It's like a gift from god!

There are some people who are missing the point of the question, I think.

Yes, it's true that religion does bad things. And that's part of why religion is being..well...attacked.

However. If a religion is true, it would be good to defend it. And of one believes the religion to be true, it would be good to defend it.

I defend evolution, I defend the big bang, I defend the rationality of not believing in a god. I fight homeopathy, I fight new age hippiness, I fight woo woo spirituality and all of the things that I don't believe in.

Why? Not just because I think these things are true, or false, respectively, but because I have a healthy respect FOR the truth, and this leads me to fight against that which I don't believe reflects the truth.

I do, however, believe that it's possible I could be wrong on all of these points. And it is the duty of those who think I am to engage me, not stand aside and submit to every point without a fight.

I believe that anything that you believe in is worth fighting for. Whether it be religion, your family, your morals, your country or just simply Mama's apple pie. I would love to fight for Christianity, sadly I am yet lacking in knowledge to compete against those who challenge/attack me for my beliefs.

It sure would be nice for everyone to coexist in peace, but by the looks if it everyone is trying to prove they're right and in the end nobody gets anywhere.

At the start, you said that anything you believe is worth fighting for. Racism is a belief, so your saying wars should be fought for one race to be superior. Hmm.

On a different note, I disagree with you saying that you should fight for what you believe in, because many people will die. Some religions require sacrifices daily. Then the government bans it, and it becomes a cult.

The point I'm trying to make is, some beliefs are dangerous to others and more people should not die over something so stupid in the first place.

Well, there are as many peaceful beliefs as there are dangerous beliefs. Let's take the issue of race for example. Some people believe in Racial superiority while others believe in Racial equality. Fighting will break out no matter what and if you don't do anything in the end you'll end up losing too much ground.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that what I mean by fighting doesn't necessarily mean wars and violent methods. Ghandi is a prime example what can be done without the need for taking up arms.

In the end, it would be much better if peaceful coexistence could be achieved. It seems that we still have a long way to go before that happens though.

Peace will never be achieved, for it is human nature to fight. If there were 2 people on the planet, they would kill each other. Personally, I hate religion, because people believe in something so hard, that they would die for it, yet they never question it.

But, my sentences don't make sense, even to me. The point I try to make gets lost. But, I'll sum it up right here. People will fight and die for something someone else told them was real when they were 5 years old, like the boogeyman.

I've long since lost faith in religion, and finding George Carlin just reinforced it.

Religion isn't worth fighting for. It might've helped in the past, when people needed something to cling on to, but that was the old days. And like with time, everything changes. We're much more civilized and advanced compared back then, mentally, physically, psychologically, and philosophically. But spiritually, most (and by most, I mean the Roman Catholics) are still the same as the stone ages. They keep the same values, yet try to adapt to the present, which results in hypocrisy at its best.

It's still a mystery to me why religion has survived all these years. I guess some are still not strong enough that they need to cling onto someone.

Let me put it this way. Back when Jesus (or was it Simon Peter?) created Christianity, it can be compared as to like we are still kids that are clinging onto their parents. Now, centuries later, we're now more advanced like I said, we're all big and strong now, yet we are still clinging onto our parents, refusing to tackle the world on our own.

George has stated it already, but the most bloodiest and most gruesome battles in history were all in the- oh screw it



PS. I'm Roman Catholic, btw. I go to church not for God, but for the amusement of my elders. They're heavy believers, so are my parents. I don't want them to die of shock from learning that i've stopped believing in their Lord.

Beliefs and Ideals are always worthy fighting for and defending.

But they are not something that should mean you should close yourself off completely from having an open mind.

And that applies to any side of the Religion debate. Because if you fight from the standpoint that the other side is completely wrong and that all of what they think and believe is wrong and stupid then you have already lost and are treading the grounds of hubris which only leads to ignorance and hypocrisy.

I believe the christian faith but I think all this fighting over it is bullshit. Sadly there are lots of Christians that will immediately resort to violence when it is completely against the bible. I swear lots of them are just fucking idiots.

That's where your wrong kirari. There are reasons to take someones life. If someone was going to kill someone you love what would you do if you can't rely on anyone but yourself? and what if you stopped the person and he keeps at it again and again? There are reasons to take someones life when its called for!
