I empathized with you brother. I'm also a Roman Catholic and I know how hypocritical sometimes Christians can be. I know sometimes we lose faith in our religion because of people tend to use it for personal gain but trust me there are far more lowly reasons why people kill each other. This is straight from the heart you defend your faith rather than fight for it. I take this stance because I rather not provoke a religious discussion with one for the sole reason that no one is neither right nor wrong. One's faith is of ones choosing, most of the times other sect provokes or challenges another sect then that is the time to be steadfast on one's faith and defend it.
Religion can be troubling at times and men are fickle and weak but it is one my expression that a person believing in his faith and protecting is better than a person without belief or that without anything to hold in that persons heart.

But, my sentences don't make sense, even to me. The point I try to make gets lost. But, I'll sum it up right here. People will fight and die for something someone else told them was real when they were 5 years old, like the boogeyman.

A world with mutual understanding is possible if people can just drop their pride, shut up for a minute and try to hear the other side out ,respect and try to understand, accept them ( as long as no one is harmed physically) instead of being hostile towards their difference.
Anyway I believe in the multiverse theory so no I don't think religion is worth fighting for.

In a non-violent matter yes, then people should fight for their faith and believes.
Even though many believe that blood shed is required for their religion to live on or become superior, I believe that everybody should go their own way and believe in what they wanna believe, I read/seen/heard enough stories about religion to see where this is going.
Although I believe in Islam, I would never harm a human being just for the sake of my religion.
If somebody wants to convert to Islam/Christianity/Judaism/Buddhism... then we shouldn't raise our arms in anger and say, "No they are the devil, do not go!!!!"
I believe we could live in a world where many religion can co-exist and still build a better community not based on their religion, but based on things they have in common, which is, we all are human beings and we all have needs in order to stay alive.
But if you are asking is religion worth fighting for in a violent matter, then no, never, I hate seeing tears shed from women and children and the pain and the burden men have to carry of their hands stained from the blood of their opponent.

An answer to your topic title. No, it really shouldn't be. Matter of fact, it shouldn't have to ever come to that.
I don't practice 'religion' so to speak. I am a Buddhist by name, and by philosophy alone. I don't believe in any reincarnation cycle or anything like that. Simply live a just, and honest life.
When I see those nut-jobs, spouting nonsense that they have been chosen by 'God' to see errors of other human beings, while embezzling money from those less fortunate, my blood boils. What incentive do you need to help another human being? Sure, I'm in college and neck deep in dept, but I'm going to become a doctor with no outside objective other than helping others in need.
I'm sure religion is something for those with nothing left, or someone who feels that their life isn't worth anything, but you only have yourself in the end.
The whole issue with religion is that they overlap. Causing inconsistencies in everyone's stories. Maybe it's because I'm not one of faith, but why does it matter? For that particular matter, nobody alive today was there when it happened, so who are they to think they're right enough to cause wars with each other?
Just my personal thoughts on religion and war. I apologize thoroughly if I offended anyone. Just my opinions of course.

The way the universe was created and how it works
Religion says god created everything
Multiverse Theory says (or as I understand it) that our world was created from ideas and concepts from other being (most likely humans from another universe) just as we create worlds from ideas.When an idea or a decision is made, the universe splits and creates a universes for all possible scenarios. (example is you were to choose between a cup coffee, milk and ice tea and you chose ice tea, the universe splits and creates universes where you chose the other cups)

add some more people to the scene
give it a story
voila I just made a new universe
now I'm a god
Then again since we created religion and all those other paranormal stuff this also means the god is real ( since god is a concept formed by human) but their power does not apply to our world because its probably being used in that dream world we created and the reason why our world is so imperfect is probably because those who created it wanted it to be that way .
We barely know anything about the universe and what's beyond it, or what created it or why it was created so rather than perceiving the world physically why not try seeing it in a more let's say as an idea or a concept. Gotta love quantum physics but rather than looking at space for the answer those damn scientist should try exploring the human brain's ( the thing that can create realities) abilities more I mean they weren't able to explain what the soul is so why not?
And no I'm not gonna bother fighting for something as abstract as an ideal I mean come on people can believe what they want to believe, experience the reward/ consequences that comes with it as long as no one gets hurt.
Go ahead and call me crazy ..I don't mind.I just love finding new possibilities and till know I'm searching for answers ( maybe I should have considered taking a job as a scientist rather than a sculptor) and sorry if I went off topic for a bit.

I was raised as a catholic by my parents. However, due to the new environment I'm in, I have started to believe that religion exists to satisfy the need to know that there is some sort of being greater than us that governs everything. It calms the society by telling them that everything is not random and happens for a reason. It gives them something to hope for and believe in rather than just dwell on the fact that they know relatively nothing compared to the vastness of the universe.
