"random" happens when there are factors unknown
a dice for example, each number would have an equal 1/6 chance to come up
but if we were to take a number of factors to consideration, like how the dice was thrown, it's orientation before it was thrown, the distance of the dice to the center of the Earth, the temperature, density and pressure of the air in which the dice would travel through, the material where the dice would land, even the gravitational pull exerted by the moon, sun and other heavenly bodies, and so on... we would be able to predict exactly what number would be shown on the dice; the random factor is nullified...
although in practice, it's impossible to acquire such great amount of data in an instant...
well, in that sense, life on Earth is not a fluke, it was inevitable

Since the discovery of Earth-2 (nickname coined by the news I have no clue of its actual name) found so close to us have increased the chances of their being intelligent life in the galaxy not the universe to 1% and many anyalst that number may grow higher...while that dosen't sound like alot...it is. There is no real doubt of intelligent life out besides us...just whevther or not mankind will ever see it.
humans are the most adaptable living things on Earth because they could do away with any compromise, such as being unable to fly, by using their brains, front-looking eyes, dexterous hands and their convenient ability to communicate with its own kind, to come up with an airplane design instead of waiting for hundred thousand years to grow wings and have hollow bones
so eventually, with the help of the trial and error method called Survival of the Fittest by Mother Nature, life on another planet could be more than just "life" and be more like "intelligent life"
...that or extremely fast metabolism
(i'm thinking of Starcraft right now...)
i could say that there is a good 25% chance for life to exist on another planetary system, and as long as there is at least 10 billion years for that life-containing planet to sustain life, it might just bear intelligent life...
