*this only applying to Christians* I've got to say the fact that people can just do a death bed confessions, basically defeats the purpose of having a moral standing or a god. If I kill someone and the rape their husband. Then as long as I accept Jesus as my one true way to heaven, then i will be given entrance to heaven. So morals are not always held up by religion. You can always find fun loopholes, like the one I just mentioned.
Here's my 2 cents. Anyone that uses forgiveness as a means to exploit a loophole is not truly sorry and therefore not truly forgiven. I do believe that if someone commits crimes such as murder or rape, but in the end they truly understand what they did was wrong and are truly sorry, then they are forgiven. I don't think of it as a loophole for getting away with being immoral but rather an example of the mercy of God.
Something a friend of mine pointed out was that he believes that God sees sin all the same. That he has no measure of which sin is worse than another. To God, every sin is just as bad as the rest. Sin is sin, be it lying or killing. Of course in our world we need to have such a measure, mostly for legal purposes.
Back on topic: I believe that there is no way to properly measure which has had a bigger impact with any amount of accuracy. I like to compare this fight between money and god to the war in the middle east. In a way the U.S. represents money in that we are better funded and more motivated by money than God to fight. The other side is clearly more motivated by God. This war has been going on for many many years now with no clear end in sight. That is how I see this war between money and God. It will go on forever with no clear winner in terms of impact on the world.
