How do I know I'm even insulting someone? What if I just say a statistical truth like..."On average Hispanics and Blacks(never liked the term African American) have a lower IQ than Asians", and someone gets offended? Here lies the problem, you believe anything is alright as long as it aligns with your beliefs. Not only that, being is offended is subjective, what some find offensive may not be to others. No one should be responsible for others feelings, they should be responsible for themselves. If they choose to protect others feelings, they shouldn't force everyone to be subject to their will, majority or minority.

He simply stated something like being offended is subjective, and that there's nothing wrong with being offended, but continuing to stay offended at a remark/joke is just childish and shows that the offended person can't move on. I also don't think you know what the word troll is.

I say there shouldn't be any kind of "restrictions" on jokes. It's a joke, it's not meant to be taken seriously. Rape, mental retardation, race, religion, ect. Like Carlos Mancia he knows it's all for laughs, and his jokes usually piss off people who don't understand that he's a comedian.

Let me clarify so that you don't respond with a straw-man argument: I'm not saying that someone will be like "lol a rape joke, I guess it isn't as tragic as I thought it was... I'm gonna rape someone now because I heard that joke". What I'm saying is that a large majority of people will be just a little more likely to rape. If someone that was on the borderline of raping heard the joke, this could effect whether or not he rapes.

I don't think legal action should be taken to stop rape jokes, as I think freedom of speech extends to this level. Though, I would like to point out that freedom of speech does have limitations. For example, cussing at someone on public premises can be charged as a verbal assault. I don't have much knowledge on harassment laws, but I know there are some against business marketing, and I'm pretty sure there are some for hate-based harassment. So, freedom of speech does have a stopping point, but I think offensive jokes should be protected by freedom of speech

I was expecting two things after posting what I said earlier, either a brief essay like explanation like yours (don't get me wrong, your explanation was tremendously done) or just short replies about how I poured my emotion onto my post, so I decided to make my post ironic to see if anyone's just gonna comment on it, not my whole point of view. I agree with Lordisgae and cruz on the mind being lazy and anger views but I think most people use "Anger" as a form of escape.

Essentially my counter to that is to provide statistics or you have no argument.

I would even argue against it , not only against it but i think it's totaly the reverse situation happening . First step why your first step is irrelevant :

You see shades of morality when in fact that's absolutly not how the brain work , you don't change your mind on either rape is bad or good because you heard a joke abouth it . No one is on the gray zone abouth rape , people find it bad or good and it take a big factor to change someone's mind .

You have a reason to think rape is bad , every time you question if it's good or bad you get into an aguementation in yourhead . Many little false argument wont change your mind but a big true one might . And even there , it's only might , so imagine what are the probability that one little false argument actualy make someone change his mind on rape ...

Second step , why rape jokes are a good thing : There is a french proverb (i don't know if it exist in english) that says this : speak abouth it in good , speak abouth it in bad , the important is to speak abouth it .

When you speak abouth rape , even if it's in a joke format , there is one thing that change in peoples mind ; it become less taboo . You think a rape victime in the 50s would have gone to the police and say that his father raped her ? No because it was so shamefull for the person and anyway the police would have done nothing . The more we speak abouth taboo subjects (a subject is known as not taboo anymore once you can freely do jokes abouth it) the more people are aware of the subject , aware of the reality of the problem . The joke itself might not have any impact on the population , but if you are an offended journalist that heard the joke , let me tell you that people will talk abouth it more than enough .

True, but people must learn to use humor to counterbalance pain from tragedy with tact. I recall a comedian, about a day or two after the big earthquake that happened in Japan in 2011. He was fired almost instantaneously. The joke? “Japan is really advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.”. Now, the joke is funny because they are pretty damned advanced, but at the same time I think "Seriously? The thing just happened. Not cool. Show some respect to the dead."

First we are not defending rape culture (whatever it means) . The thread is not abouth rape , it's abouth joking abouth tragic subjects . The exemple given here is rape , but let's say we take for exemple the joke i did on the the dark knight tragedy that happened 2 days ago , would you be as offended ?
