Yipeeee!!! I solve my problem, here:
Go to regional and language Options, at the language-for-not-unicode-program ""DO NOT"" set it to japanese, set it to, say english(australia) then use applocale to run the .exe file in japanese after upadating and using the no dvd patch fredericklim posted.
I know it sound stupid but it work for me.
(for regional option, i don't know it affects or not but i left my location japan and standard and format japanese.)

fixe the number problem but now it just starts and crashes no error message. the black screen appears as if its playing then it closes right away

I also thought it was a problem with the font. But I cannot seem to access the tinyurl page, and I was wondering if you could upload it again on mediafire/megaupload/others again ^^

Hmm.... I installed my fonts, but still no dialogue.
Tried both methods, what could have been wrong?
EDIT: I realized that the voices dont work either... do I need to update it before playing?
EDIT 2: I updated it, ran the program, after the warning notices I get a black screen with a voice, then two options again without dialogue...This is really frustrating T.T

whenever i start the game, it goes directly to the "This program is not responding" pop-up. i installed it correctly, i think, any suggestions?

This game has a wide variety of problems it seems. If you haven't installed the patch on the web site I would suggest trying that first. It's supposed to fix some issues with the game crashing when started.

After numerous frustrating tries I gave up, and resorted to my japanese Vista laptop. Everything works perfectly now... Somehow my XP doesnt want to apply the japanese fonts to the game.

i'm running vista home premium and i can't change my regional settings or whatever. i've tried everything else that everyone has said to do in this thread but i still can't get past the black screen and credits intro. after it says in white "Star Mine Girl" it fades to white and then freezes. any advice?

the option to change to japanese regional settings in Vista is in the "regional/language settings" options in the control panel... i have vista home basic and i had no problem changing my locale...
cant wait for an english translation... rough translations are usually hard to understand... they usually leave me half confused as to what the hell they are saying...

Erm, i sound like an idiot, but isn't this the same update as the one included in the game upload, as both are 1.01a updates, because when i try to run it(after installing game and update), it gives me a message with an ok button after i specified the game folder. The cover page said it was an english patch, which was why i wanted it to work so badly lol.
