Also, too many old games have been rehashed by upping the graphics and then selling it again. I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but Pokemon is a big offender. Each Pokemon plays exactly like the one before it, going all the way back to Pokemon Blue and Red. Even the new Soul Silver and Heart Gold. What's wrong with just playing the original Silver and Gold? Why exactly does it need to be remade with new graphics and sold on the DS?
Well, with Pokemon HG/SS there is actually the nice reason that the old games are not compatible with the new ones. That series' real problem seems to be the addition of more and more Pokemon with each generation, some of them just copies of old ones, some just plain ridiculous, up to the point where no-one will even think of
"catching them all", despite that being the final goal of the game. Compared to other "updated" games, Pokemon is doing rather well, not really changing anything in the basic gameplay, while making the game available to owners of newer consoles.
Perhaps that could have been said of Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Red. These two games were on the original Gameboy. Very few people would have the game or even the handheld it self. But the DS does come with a GBA port and it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to find the game and play it on the DS. What Nintendo is doing is simply rehashing an old game and then reselling with some tacked on gimmick so that they can get more money from an old game.
GBA, yes. The original Gold/Silver were GBC, though, and are not supported by DS anymore. But yes, they do like to add some unnecessary gimmicks...
Whoops. My apologies. I forgot that S/G came out on the Color and not the GBA. Still kind of shows many fucking Pokemon games have been made in the exact same format. I like Pokemon, don't get me wrong. But I'm extremely tired of playing the exact same game for a decade.
Let me summarize the story of every Pokemon game: Get your Pokemon. Start catching Pokemon/Beating trainers and gym leaders. Find out some evil plot to take over the world by Team ______. Stop them. Continue your journey. Beat the elite four. Beat the Pokemon Champion. Become new champion.
Pokemon could be done so much better. How about some sidequests? Perhaps like the ones in the anime? Seems like an interesting concept. Instead of doing the same thing over and over again for the past what 5 generations of games.

It used to be that when you played a game, there was a clear health bar
I wish it would return to this and stay. I'm sick of games with full auto heal in a matter of seconds.
It really depends on the game. But yes, I'd love some of that as well.
BioShock 2 still has the health bar, so there's an example. Then there are the games that are slightly more realistic. While I usually prefer Hbars, I seem to have this odd sense of appreciation for realism. In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, there is health regeneration, but in a game where everything is destructible, going for cover and waiting for health to come back is not the greatest idea.
I wonder when lollercookiez is going to start ranting about bad voice-acting - I found the English voices and VA of BlazBlue to be terrible.
I'll have plenty more ranting set for later. But for now, I need to get some studying done.

Dude, you forgot to mention the overly ridiculous DRMs.
On another note, I got to agree, those trends are pretty common now a days.
Yes, perhaps this will be my next rant.
