Danni had a horrifying dream, one that shook her to her very core. It started off as a very surreal, but peaceful venue. She stood in her pyjamas (Pink long sleeved, collared shirt with equally pink shorts on) in a field filled to the very brim with all kinds of flowers. They were in such high density that the ground itself, for all she knew, could in fact not exist as she couldn’t see to surface her feat stood on. She then noticed a figure off in the distance, the breeze blowing their long hair as they stared off into a blinding sunlight that could not decide whether it was rising or setting.
Danni called out to the figure, but they did not respond, every step she took seemed only to increase the distance between her and the figure. Soon the light from the sun began to die out until all was black, and the flowers wilted and died. The floor beneath her (now visible amongst the dead carcases of flowers) turned into a marshy swamp. She realised something truly horrifying next, she was slowly sinking into the dark marsh beneath her, and her struggling, anxious flailing only seemed to accelerate her decline. Something then cruelly grabbed onto her head and squeezed until she was whining in pain. Danni opened a single, reluctant eye to see the figure of Chloe in front of her. She smiled deviously, except it was not like her previous smiles; this one was of pure malice. Chloe thrust Danni’s face into the marsh, robbing her of breath and quickly began to make her chest feel as if it was bursting into flames from the lack of oxygen. Her head grew lighter until her eyes began to roll back into her head, her eyes losing colour all the time until they turned milky.
And just as she was on the verge of death, a large blaring noise exploded out of nowhere. It blared constantly over and over again in the same annoying rhythmic pattern. A high pitched wailing was the closest description one could give it. Danni sprang up in her bed, the area she had been sleeping on was drenched in sweat, as was her shirt. She looked around to see herself in her now fully decorated princess-like room coloured in a bright pink. A shining light shot through her windows with the blinds now drawn back. Danni turned herself to her bedside table to find her alarm clock as the source of the incessant crying that had awoken her. She let out a grateful sigh and patted her alarm clock before thanking as she set it to snooze.
For a few brief moments she sat on the edge of her bed trying to make sense of what she had witnessed in her dreams. What she had saw was obviously not reality, but neither did it hold no significance whatsoever. It frightened her, that much was obvious without question but it made her more curious. She attempted to think about it rationally, nightmares weren’t a common occurrence to her, she usually would sleep peacefully in the past despite her crippling loneliness. Was it a symbol of her own fears? Was she afraid that she would at fault for causing her perfect worlds destruction and lead to Chloe casting her out? With each thought, more troubling and terrifying than the last, she trembled even more. Her own chest began to ache in pain, with all her might she tried and tried to convince herself to think that everything she had just witnessed was a fabrication and was simply a trick being played on her by her subconscious.
As her rambling thoughts continued to linger on, a sharp knock came from her door and it slowly opened revealing a man in a finely dressed suit, with a dark haircut that was greying at the sides, standing by her door. He shuffled his upper lips in discontent to see Danni still sat on the side of her bed, given how at this point it still had to be at earliest late morning.
“Miss Danielle, your Father has requested you please stop ignoring your duties as eldest child by lying in all day…” he spoke in an upper-class British accent, similar in region to Danni’s but more refined in nature. Almost like it was an act to seem sophisticated. He noticed the dark and moist patches on Danni’s back that outlined the features of her body and raised an eyebrow “My Lady, could it be perhaps you have a high temperature that is causing your perspiration?” He asked with a considerate tone.
Danni considered this, she placed the back of her hand against her forehead to ascertain if she had a fever and, as a result, if the delirium of such a high temperature had caused her dream. No such luck though, as she found her forehead to be cool and the only feeling akin to sickness was the groggy feeling of her body waking up.
“No Charles, I’m fine…jus…hot I suppose…” Danni clung onto her wet sleeves as she lied, rather poorly. Despite this, Charles shuffled his upper lip and slowly began to close the door.
“I’ll inform you father that you will make your way down with haste” He said in a calming way, before smirking, letting the door shut and leaving Danni on her lonesome again. She then pulled out her usual casual attire and began changing into a buttoned up, white collared T-shirt with frilly ends, a red hoodie that she left unzipped, a black skirt and multi-coloured knee socks. She entered into the bathroom and sprayed on some antiperspirant before quickly sorting out her hair and adding on her trademark braids to her hair after coming it. Finally, before leaving her room she put on some white slippers and descended the stairs down to the ground floor of her house, where loud and obnoxious yelling could be heard from the kitchen. Danni popped her head into the room to see Samantha and Gideon sat at a long wooden table as they ate their lunch.
The room itself was substantially bigger than most kitchens would be, Danni’s father always went for the extravagant, even at the expense of practical uses. There was various pantries containing all kinds of spices, cereals and other cooking materials. The floor was a black and white mosaic and the walls were lined with cupboards and counters.
Samantha had obviously done something to upset Gideon, as he was crying and she was revelling in her ability to cause this. Her haughty laughter echoed around the entire house. Gideon stood up out of his chair and ran over to Danni, clutching onto her waist and crying into her as he blabbered on about gibberish, his crying and hiccupping causing his words to slur into one incoherent whine. “What’s the matter Gideon?” Danni patted her brother on the head and gently stroked his short brown hair, trying to console him.
“Samantha…said…I-I was…stupid!” Gideon remained slightly calm for his sentence, trying to inform his elder sister of Samantha’s acts but ended of returning to his waling all over again.
“Sam!” Danni yelled, trying to sound as commanding as possible but came across as someone meekly attempting to take charge despite their fear resounding in their voice. “You should be a better older sister! That’s no way to treat Gideon!” Danni picked Gideon up and sat him back in his chair before briefly kissing him on the forehead and stroking his head with an affectionate smile, causing Gideon to smile in return with a small giggle.
Samantha pouted in her seat as Gideon received all of Danni’s affections, despite generally being a disobedient child who would disobey orders and caused her family trouble at a moment’s notice, her idol had always been her older sister. Danni was the apple of her family’s eye: smart, creative, kind and beautiful beyond belief. All things that Samantha desired to be, her protective and ever-present older sister was one of the few people who could stomach her straightforward and dominant personality and could yet still spend time with her without growing frustrated. In many ways, Samantha reminded Danni of a much younger Blake.
“Fine…Danni! Can you get me some juice?” Samantha said in a much brighter tone.
“Huh? Can’t you…?” Danni began to ask a question, but Samantha’s bright smile was not without its charms, and Danni sighed before walking off to the fridge and pulling out a carton of orange juice and two glasses: One for Samantha and one for herself.
“Sissy…you look pale…” Gideon said as Danni bent down to hand Samantha her drink, Danni looked oddly amused by Gideon’s obvious worry, trying to hide her own fears over her nightmare. Still, Gideon was of no stranger to someone looking sickly, his entire life had been plagued with trip to the ICU’s of many different hospitals due to his poor constitution. Thanks to this, he easily managed to notice Danni looked overly tired for just getting up and was paler than usual.
“No, no, no! I’m fine, I just had a bad dream is all…” Danni tried to assure Gideon it was nothing to be concerned of, but he looked unconvinced by her statements.
“I don’t like it when you lie Sissy…” Gideon said quietly to himself, however, Danni overheard his whispers and knelt down beside him, gently rubbing his arm to melt away his insecurities.
“I promise nothing is wrong Gideon, okay? It was just a bad dream” Danni said, fixing her eyes straight on Gideon’s and didn’t break eye contact with him all the while. Eventually Gideon nodded to himself and returned to his food in front of him.
“Yeah Gidiot! Danni wouldn’t lie to us!” She yelled across at her brother, who refused to acknowledge her statement. Suddenly, their Father rounded the corner by the back of the room, dressed in a typical black business suit with a red tie.
“Took you a while to wake up” He said, leaning through the doorway into the hall at the back of the room and house respectively. There was almost an air of calmness and trust emanated in his words, as if there was no reason not to trust anything he said. However, it was still a strong and commanding voice, useful given the line of work he was in as a businessman for a global company.
“Yeah sorry, I slept in late since it’s a weekend” Danni said back with a smile as she put on an apron and began to clean dirty plates in the sink behind Samantha.
“Pretty useless alarm clock if it can’t even wake you up…” Karim grumbled as he ruffled a beaming Gideon’s hair.
“I set it for later than usual on purpose. I was tired after the last few days…” Danni
purposefully withheld information concerning not only her escapades involving her new friends, but also the romantic involvement between her and Chloe. She only did it since it was difficult for her to gauge how her father would react, he was a passionate and strong man who believed in letting others know his opinion no matter how different the two opinions would be. Furthermore, he was extremely protective of his children, and on one occasion had beaten an assailant whom had targeted Danni, but that is a story for another day. However, he was considerate and held more liberal views regarding the love between two individuals. Whilst this of course gave Danni some hope about coming clean to her father over the love she had for another girl (the awkward and weird thoughts had quickly left her mind about that), she was still fearful over how her father could react.
Karim raised his eyebrow over her statement, “What odd behaviour…” he thought to himself, Danni usually always punctual about waking up and looking after her siblings, given how her father could have to run off to work at any second which could leave the children unattended depending on how occupied their mother was. So it was necessary on weekends for Danni to devote her time to her younger siblings in case of a (work-related) crisis. Despite his slight concerns regarding her attitude, it wasn’t like this was the first time she had ever slept in late or been so casual about it. Plus Karim considered how she should be allowed to slack off a little, anyway, it’s not like she was far if anything did happen. “So, how has school been going then? Any troubles?” he asked, softening in expression and smiling down at Gideon before giving his own cheeky wink to Samantha, who stuck her tongue out back at him; a little game they had that more resembled an inside joke more than anything.
“Umm…no issues no…” Danni said timidly, trying her best to sound as convincing as possible as she lied through her teeth.
“What about your classmates? Any of them nice?” Karim asked, expecting the same as always: Danni to hang her head in depression and state that she doesn’t know. Still, as a father he had to hold the hope that she would one day swing around and with a flustered smile say that she did in fact make a friend.
Danni lifted her head up and stared at her image in the window ahead of her, she looked somewhat quizzical about the question proposed to her. Like the answer was simple, yet abstract at the same time. Whilst all of her new friends could be listed as nice, they each seemed a little dark in their own way. Blake needed no deep explanation or analysis, she was Blake: Plain and simple. Melanie was somewhat cold to others and seemed disconnected to her own feelings, as well as slightly manipulative. Chloe was secretive about some things, albeit very personal things so it wasn’t like she could be blamed for that. “Yes.” Danni said rather abruptly and realised that her father may not have been completely satisfied with that answer “I’ve made a few friends since the first day” Danni turned and saw her father’s jaw hanging by its hinges, he was in a state of complete shock.
“A friend? An actual friend? You’re not pulling my leg right?” Karim said, his eyes widened at her words, unable to properly process what she had just said.
“Yes! Her name is…” Danni began when a figure entered into the doorway behind her and let out a small, feminine and calmly sweet chuckle.
“A girl named Chloe” Chloe said, standing behind Danni in a white-collared, frilly shirt and jean-like shorts that met her knees in terms of length. Danni slowly jarred around to face Chloe, who had a typical bright smile written across her face. Danni was full of both dread over what Chloe could be doing here, and if she was about to reveal their relationship and potentially bring about Danni’s worst fears regarding her father’s reaction.
Danni’s mother then appeared behind the two, holding her cheek in her hand with her own proud smile aimed directly at her eldest child “As soon as she told me you two were friends Danielle, I couldn’t help but let her inside. I don’t remember the last time you had a friend over!” Audrey exclaimed with Chloe nodding in agreement.
“You let her in based just on that? She could be a murderer!” Karim yelled, obviously with sarcasm mixed into his voice and a smile creeping onto his face.
“It’s true, I’ve been called a lady-killer before” Chloe chuckled.
Danni rushed over and grabbed Chloe by the arm, leading her out of the room and away from her parents “We need a moment alone!” she said with a voice full of haste and at such a frequency that it took her parents a few seconds to properly discern what she had just said.
Danni gave a harsh look towards Chloe and her sudden arrival, flustered all the while with Chloe admiring Danni’s cute reactions to the situation that she had been thrown into.
“What do you think you’re doing here?!” Danni whispered so no-one could overhear their conversation, although the tone of voice she used was one of irritation.
“Hmm? Just visiting my lov-” Chloe began before Danni covered her mouth and commanded her to be quiet by shushing her.
“What if my Dad hears you? He’ll go mental! And next time text me!” Danni said and Chloe rolled her eyes in response.
“Geez, you’re no fun” Chloe teased and patted Danni on the head affectionately, despite her angered demeanour. “Anyhow, I have something you might be interested in…” Chloe, looking suspiciously intrigued in her own thoughts.
“W-What is it…?” Danni leaned back a little, raising an eyebrow at Chloe’s statement.
“How about…” Chloe paused for a second “We go Ghost-Hunting?” Chloe said, leaving Danni in a stunned position from how serious Chloe both looked and sounded. Of course, she was convinced by Chloe in order to come along.
Ghost-hunting was their newest adventure.
