(This is a Joint post starring: Cinia Pacifica and Bagman.)
Owain prowled through the camp in search of likely prey. He had done this earlier and managed to catch a glimpse of some female warriors changing, and such caused his wonderful mood.
Louise gazed longingly - her emerald pupils reflected the glowing stars as they were fixated towards the starry sky - stargazing. Standing before a half-frozen lake that she stumbled across after walking aimlessly throughout the camp - she finally found herself coming to a cessation as she faced the admirable night sky. The view was admittedly beautiful, even according to her own standards. It was astounding. She couldn’t fall asleep tonight, she was in a mood to walk off listlessly instead, which she ended up doing. Sleeping in her tent would have been a waste now that she thought back about the moment she exited the dark tent - the bright stars deserved her full attention at the moment. To simply sleep now would be such a waste for the view… I may as well stay up a while longer.
Spying the lone girl, Owain approached. “Sure is a clear sky tonight” he commented, “any reason a girl like yourself is still up?”
“For the gently glowing stars, of course,” Louise answered, turning towards the knight who approached her; strolling specifically to her. She could tell someone was advancing in her direction due to the faint clanky noises, but didn’t think the person would try to actually converse with her. “Patrolling, I take it?” Louise asked, shoving her pointless analytical thoughts aside for now.
Owain glanced sideways, guiltily, “urm… something like that” he said sheepishly, “Sir Owain Glyn, at your service” bowing.
Louise grinned, making it apparent that her eyes picked up a sign from his expressions. “Sir Owain, why not come clear and say that you wished to approach a pretty lady like me instead of fulfilling duty?” Louise asked with a gleeful face. “I do believe honesty is a fine trait for men, you know?”
Owain laughed, “caught red handed, huh?” he observed jokingly, “It’s true, I was drawn in by your beauty, but I am yet to hear your name.”
Louise resumed stargazing - looking back to the bright night sky. “Louise Marguerite of the Augusta house. The High Priestess, I doubt my name is unheard of, especially recently.”
“Must be my lucky day” Owain grinned, “meeting the High Priestess, it’s an honour m’lady”
“Haha, it’s been some time since someone took it as their lucky day by meeting me,” Louise stated, earnestly. She had been the topic of others’ conversations as someone who appeared out of the blue to take up the position of the high priestess. However, Louise was rather glad - this way, she’d not have to deal with the general public often.
“I don’t see how meeting someone as good looking as you could be considered anything but” Owain smiled.
Louise shrugged. “I suppose taking up this position caused quite a stir among the general public - a typical aftermath I suppose. I am viewed as nothing but a sign of bad omen. People loves to gossip, after all,” Louise replied, holding a light smile over her face. “Maybe they’d sing praises to me after meeting me in person at least once,” Louise smirked, confident in her own beauty. There was no way men would talk bad about her after catching a glimpse. However, women may easily become jealous… Louise decided against pondering further about this aspect of female psychology.
“I’ve never cared much for politics” Owain said, “it’s often just a bunch of people I’ll never meet, debating things that don’t matter. I care for gossip even less, baseless rumour mostly”
“I suppose so,” Louise said as she faced the knight yet again. “However, you have made an error in that line. You have just met a person who debates about such things in the background - albeit I don’t assume the topics pointless unlike you. Politics is somewhat important for me after all - to bound my ties to important people. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother.”
“I suppose I have” he laughed again, “I understand that politics is important but, as a knight my duty is to protect, politics doesn’t change that, so I guess, for me politics carries no weight”
“Oh? Even though it’s due to politics that dictates your missions - the life-threatening work you have to deal with?” Louise asked, but didn’t reveal a questioning expression. Heh, you contradict yourself, Sir Knight. You say that politics is important, but you’ve implied earlier that the debates are pointless.
“Even then what I do is in keeping of the kingdom, it doesn’t matter whose orders I’m taking, my role doesn’t change” Owain said.
“How very reliable of you,” Louise praised half-heartedly, smiling, “to be blindly working for the top brass,” Louise added, sarcastically.
“I wouldn’t call it blindly following orders, but I have a role to play” Owain said, “as do you m’lady, only yours is far more important”
“I feel as though the position has been sullied by time, over the years,” Louise nonchalantly replied. With all the changes she found in belief and system, it was as if she was having a culture shock. For things to change this much - was within expectations - but she found herself unprepared to tread that path immediately. “I’m not a fan of the current figure who leads the people, either. Makes me think what the world is coming to… ”
“What can you do, eh?” he asked rhetorically, “time moves so quickly it’s hard to keep up and who commands the power changes with it, although honestly I have no real opinion of those in power.”
“Not so hard to develop one if you get to know, I suppose that’s the hard part for most,” Louise responded, looking down at Owain. I suppose it’s the reason why this is pitiful. He doesn’t have a clue that the princess is incompetent. I can’t quite judge Arkasia yet, but she is rather… impatient and awkwardly straightforward, Louise thought to herself. “Pray tell, who do you serve under at the moment, Sir Owain?”
“Sir Arkasia” he replied “I’m a knight banneret of Arkasia”
“Ah, the impatient one,” Louise again, nonchalantly responded. She somehow had an inkling that Owain worked under her, she could feel a spec of her presence in him - instilled. However, she felt as though she made an unnecessary comment about Arkasia. Shrugging internally, she felt that it may have been better to simply let it out. Not that it’d actually hurt to be honest for once. She did somewhat prefer honesty, after all. This was the reason why she occasionally spoke the truth at times, and hid the truth the other times.
“Pffft” Owain couldn’t restrain a laugh, “She certainly is impatient, but she’s definitely the best general an army could hope to have, for one, she’s crazy strong, I’ve never once come close to beating her in training”
“I feel like she simply needs to relax more often. Right now, she bears an air similar to the young Queen,” Louise said, not quite sure what to really think of her. With the way she drew a blade right up to her neck; it did nothing but leave a bad impression. Nothing more, nothing less.
“I wish everyone would relax more often, everyone is so worked up at the moment and honestly I don’t think that’s a good thing” said Owain, “I’m not an overly serious person, so the heavy atmosphere makes me uncomfortable, y’know?”
“Haha, you’re truly unique when I compare you to the average men I met before,” complimenting, Louise laughed. War is serious business. It felt as though meeting a random clueless civilian who accidentally stumbled into the den of soldiers. “However, without said atmosphere, you can’t possibly expect the morale of the army to be high.”
“I dunno, but to me it feels like a funeral march” Owain half-joked.
“You do know that you can’t go on that way, right?” Louise resumed stargazing as she asked with a smile.
”Eh?”
Louise held the same expression as her gaze was fixated to the sky abound with stars. “If you go on - with that mindset - you’ll die, Sir Owain.”
“Everyone dies” Owain laughed, “that mindset is me, and frankly, I’d like to die as myself”
“Sounds pointless, especially because most with such manner of thinking usually dies before accomplishing... well, anything,” Louise chuckled, not too serious about the conversation. She did, however, thought that he’d meet his demise if he kept on with that kind of thinking. If one wanted to live, or avoided death - they may live longer and accomplish greater objectives due to strength derived from sheer will. However, she couldn’t truly judge a man who was not a fan of war. He was far too laid-back, to the point that it’d become an issue. On the contrary, Louise only discouraged the death of others only because she was currently the High Priestess. It was her job to encourage the army to fight with the will to witness the next day. “There is but one man, who is yet to die. I’d love to believe that everyone dies. However, that is quite not the case in this world.”
“My life isn’t top on my list of priorities if I’m bluntly honest” Owain smiled “and men are all the same at the end of the day, everyone dies, no exceptions”
“Mn, we wish,” Louse gave a nod. “Perhaps,” Louise begun, “we’ll have to wait and find out. This topic aside, what have you been tasked with - in the operation at hand?”
“I’m to capture one of the bridges according to the plan” Owain said sighing, “something feels awfully off, but I can’t put my finger on it”
“One of the bridges… I see. I shall keep a keen look-out. For my personal amusement, mind you,” Louise giggled with glee in jest. “Oh, odd you say?”
Owain laughed with Louise, “it would be good if you could remember my face, after all, I’ll need someone to identify my corpse” he joked, “and yeah… I feel like I’m missing something that someone isn’t telling me and it’s disconcerting”
“I’ve been rather forgetful recently; perhaps you should ask your crush for that particularly boring task,” Louise smirked as she replied to the joke. “Missing something, eh?”
“Crush? What do you take me for, a child?” Owain said his face trying to look serious but hints of a smile formed around his face.
“Anyone who is this steadfast to die may as well be a little childish, it’s their hidden perk,” Louise winked, smiling.
“I’m not going to die so easily, I’m actually really strong you know?” Owain said flexing in jest.
“I do feel… a very cold energy energy emanating. A watery spirit? I suppose that’s reliable,” Louise assessed, then added, “just the spirit, of course,” Louise laughed again.
“Hah, you’ll see” Owain laughed, “On a good day, I’m stronger than Arkasia”
“I highly doubt that. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, however,” Louise smiled, it was however accompanied with her commonly seen shrug this time. “Ah, it is almost time… ”
“I guess I’ll be seeing you then” Owain said, “Or… maybe not, either way, good luck”
“Ah, no, it’s a shooting star,” Louise pointed to the sky expressionlessly as she replied.
“Oh! Wow!” Owain said in awe, “I’ve never seen one before”
“Perhaps it is a sign of good omen, for now. For me, it is a sign for something completely different.”
“You’re supposed to make a wish when you see one right?” Owain asked
“Haha, is that a superstition made by plebeians?” Louise asked. Slightly amused despite knowing the answer. “It’s a sign from the heavens that I should sing. Of course, the choice lies in me, ultimately. I suppose it’s what I’m supposed to do - to derive good luck for us all. Luck is apparently associated with shooting stars, perhaps that’s why people came up with sayings such as that.”
“Well I made my wish anyway” he smiled, “you’re going to sing?”
“The head priestess asked me to do so whenever such good omen would present itself at times of leisure, you see. I’d rather laze around, personally. Feel free to stick around, I’d be taking my leave soon after.”
“I should head back soon, my group might start getting worried without their super reliable Captain around” Owain said, the corner of his mouth turning up into a smile.
As a response, Louise gave an enchanting smile as her lips stretched - not speaking any further, nor giving a nod. Instead, she looked back up to the starry night sky. Abruptly, she started to sing - subsequently closing her eyes. Her voice loud and clear; resonated throughout the camp. It may be an overstatement to say that it’d wake up the sleeping residents, but it still resounded audibly enough for the nocturnal ones to hear regardless. She could feel the gazes and stares from behind - possibly from those still awake, as expected. Louise’s body glowed with a silver-colored light. Her charms strangely boosted at the same time; making her appear seductive and provocative instead - rather than simply serene and beautiful - as she sung continuously without taking a second of break, cupping the air around her chest with her hands.
“Not bad…” Owain said, unable to get any other words out.
“Oh? You’re still here? What’s wrong? I thought you’d leave by now,” Louise questioned, pretending to be confounded. She gave the most confident smile as she spoke sarcastically.
“I wanted to hear the end of your song,” Owain smiled, “you’re pretty good”
“For now, it ended; the script stopped halfway like that,” Louise stated, pleased with the common praise. Indeed it had ended, however. Louise sang out all the words she received harmoniously from the sky above. She wouldn’t stop halfway, ever. It was against her principles. She is always thorough and proper.
“Then one day I hope that you finish it,” answered Owain as he looked to the stars. “The attack will start tomorrow if we stay on schedule. We’d best be off”
“Indeed,” Louise gave a nod to the knight. “I have mentioned that I’d take my leave as soon as I’d be done. You may take the sight of me singing as a parting gift,” Louise gave yet another enchanting smile; walking off - turning her back on the banneret knight. “Farewell.”.
Owain smiled and bowed. “Thank you m’lady. Hopefully, it will give me strength in the battle to come,” he said. “Goodnight.” Owain stayed for a moment longer thinking of the last time he looked at the stars like this. Then he too, headed back to camp. When he arrived his group was already sleeping in their tents. The guards that had the first watch were around the fire chatting. Waving to them, he went into his own tent and laid down on his bed for the night.
