When he was sure Soul had gone, Owain began to try and walk in the direction he thought the others might be. His armour had other ideas, yet again, as masses of steam was released. Owain found himself truly unable to stand, falling to his knees, the full weight of the armour suddenly pushing down on him. Owain hadn't noticed but his armour was riddled with holes.
“Gah, what?” Owain said, confused, “how did-?” Owain couldn’t get the words out. His armour was ruined. Owain shouted, almost a scream, in despair. He felt that his armour was one in the same with him, his trademark, without it he was useless.
“Hey…” a soft voice, Owain had only heard it a few times before. His spirit was quite the recluse. “I’m… really sorry about your armour, I tried my best to hold it together but…”
“Heh” Owain laughed pitifully, “I’m the one who should be apologising, I let you down, I let myself down”
“Don’t say that, idiot”Nimue scolded, “You just fought the most powerful enemy you have ever faced before, you’re lucky it was just your armour”
“But-”
“No buts”
Owain sighed, he was never able to keep up with his spirit, Nimue definitely reminded him of an old friend. “I’m too weak to fight Soul” he concluded.
“Probably” the spirit agreed.
“I’ll get stronger then,” Owain said.
“I don’t doubt that,” Nimue said slyly.
Owain’s armour creaked and clanked as he used all of his strength to pick himself up off of the floor. Loosening the straps, removing the gauntlets, the oversized scabbard, the shin guards and the chest plate, Owain took his broken armour off for the last time. If he was a more emotional person no doubt, gazing upon the ruin of his large suit of armour, he would have cried.
“Soul is definitely picking up the bill for this, that armour was ultra expensive” Owain said with determination, trying to cheer himself up. He felt terrible, like he had just lost a friend or a partner.
“Don’t forget who your real partner is” Nimue laughed.
“Yeah,” Owain said turning his back on his armour, a warrior should be laid to rest where they were felled, and to Owain his armour was as much warrior as he was, and thus he would leave it there, broken but still glorious.
“Captain!” Ari screamed as she had noticed Owain from a distance. “Captain are you okay?” Ari asked she notice Owain armour on the ground battered and ruined.
“Well… I’m fine, my armour? Not so much. I can’t really fight without it, so I guess I’m a little stuck,” Owain said rubbing the back of his head and laughing meekly. “What about you?”
“But a life for armor is a good trade if you ask me.” replied Reymond. “Did this happen in the fall?”
“It would take more than a lousy fall to break that armour” Owain answered, “I was fighting the enemy chief and this happened without me noticing. Bastard ran off in the middle of the fight.” Owain sighed, “I probably still lost though if you add the sum totals, seeing as I barely dented him and he ruined my armour,” he said dejectedly. He is so paying for it.
“I have heard stories of that man.” said Anastas. “You are lucky to still be breathing after facing him.” He kept his eyes on the surroundings, not wanting them to be caught off guard if that man came back to finish the job. ”Still, why would he just up and leave. . . Did we win?”
“Why would you even fight him yourself Captain?! From what I heard he isn’t someone you can just go one on one Captain.”
“I didn’t have a choice, and honestly he wasn’t all that, other than his freakish moves I’ve fought better,” Owain replied, “I would suggest meeting up the rest of the force but… I’m in no real position to fight half of the cursed troops that are out there without my armour”
“That’s not what I expected to hear from you Owain.” said Reymond. “Razta, Masaki, and Adelina still need us. We will have to be your armor until you acquire some more.”
“Ugh…” Owain disliked relying on others, but realised his own futility in this situation, he would have to rely on his natural talent from here on in, “fine,” he relented.
“Don’t worry Captain if anything happens I’ll have one my golems carry you away”
“No thanks” Owain turned her down instantly, “I’d rather you carried me yourself,” Owain smirked jokingly.
“Idiot!!” Ari quickly retorted. “A woman isn’t supposed to carry a man!”
As the group started off for the forest they saw a large group of divine soldiers making their way back to Raltese. Caym and Sophia led it, and on Caym’s shoulder was Masaki who was still out cold. Adelina and Razta were behind them, Adelina was helping Razta to walk.
Anastas made his way alongside Caym, seeing Masaki in that state made him feel troubled but he didn’t show any of it on his face. At most he was glad he made it out in one piece, for that he gave Masaki a pat on the shoulder and simply said ”Good work.” remaining quiet the rest of the walk back.
“You guys…” Owain said, stunned at the scene, “what happened?”
“Your men tried to take on Soul by themselves. They are lucky we got the rescue order in time. The girl just met up with us. She must be tough as nails. I don’t see a scratch on her armor.” said Sophia.
“Soul, huh? looks like I have another bone to pick with him, I should make a list” Owain said, it was hard to tell if Owain was joking or serious. “You did well Adelina, good job” Owain patted her on the shoulder.
“Thank you sir, it really wasn’t all that difficult. I’m guessing we won? The cowards are running scared.” commented Adelina.
“For now, but this is far from over,” Owain said, “I’m really gonna need a new set of armour…”
“Where would you obtain such a thing, Captain?” asked Razta.
“Same place I got the first one, an old friend,” Owain said, “I know a guy, he’s a ways out though”
“Then you better get to him once you can Captain”
