Mmmmmm, good to see Muv Luv hasn't lost its despair edge, though I was expecting a little more HeadCHOMPing.
This was a pretty satisfying episode, though I did expected them to elaborate a little more about the background and general anti-BETA tactics. I suppose the latter was more of a "show it instead" but... new people to the series might be confused. Then again, I suppose this is aimed mostly at people who knew of Muv Luv Alternative to begin with.
Moving on,
The actual battle was really well done, including all the stupid little mistakes that rookies would tend to do, and then get immediately killed afterwards. Bonus points for Yui managing to keep her calm for as long as she did given this was her first battle ever. TSF and BETA animation was pretty neat as well.
What a surprise! Americans didn't run. I'm willing to guess Roosevelt's commander will not have a very long career now. Also, the instructor guy was a beast. Such a shame we never got to know him.
Aaaaaannnnndddddd Ikaruga saves the day. I was expecting him to utter some awesome "You do not look dead to me" comment in that suave, suave voice, but I will take what I can get. Incidentally though, it should not have been possible for him to pilot a Takemikazuchi, since they weren't introduced before year 2000 (Japanese equipment designation is based on that; "Type-94" means given piece of equipment was adopted in 1994, Takemikazuchi is Type-00 after 2000). I'm also pretty sure he was implied to pilot a Zuikaku like Yui during battle of Kyoto, but whatever. He is so awesome that he can bend time and space like that. Or it was a really early prototype.
Incidentally, I'm really surprised no-one mentioned that Yui and co. aren't regular Japanese army but Imperial Royal Guard, which is much, much more skilled then average Imperial or UN forces. So image what must have happened to actual grunt newbies...
Now then, we can move to actual plot forward. Next stop: Reassigned to Alaska!
Also, the VNs take much longer to get this intense. Alternative itself in particular, since it has several-hour section devoted to the game before it (
Unlimited), and some legnthy background explanation. But once it gets going...yeah.
