List of dubs that are as good or better than subbed versions

Maybe it's just how you discover anime that determines how you approach it from then on. I liked Pokemon when I was younger, but didn't know the difference between anime and cartoon at the time. When I discovered anime, it was when Adult Swim was cool, when they did Futurama, Family Guy, then anime the rest of the night. Evangelion, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Fooly Cooly, and the rest. All these were in english and I didn't have a single problem with them.

Now down the road, I know the difference in types of anime, and I'm open minded enough to not be picky and give just about anything a chance. My favorite dub by far is Golden Boy, just amazing. I don't think people should feel like they have to pick a side. I respect other opinions, but I don't like when someone assumes something is bad.

What I really don't like, though, is when someone says all of something is 'terrible' or an 'epic fail'. When someone hasn't experienced something they like, then everything in the same category is labeled as 'bad'.

Just because they are even considering using the original English voice actor for Shinji for Rebuild, I want to fill Anno's inbox with lava!

The dub of Azumanga Daoih is one of the best in existence. The voices fit the characters, and the acting is superb. It is, in all seriousness, the best dub I have ever heard in my entire life.

And I don't say that because I saw the dub first or anything like that; it's just good.

I think I know where morrorman is coming from, though. I wouldn't say it was horrible, but after watching the sub of Azumanga Daioh first, it was difficult to watch the dub. I didn't give it much of a chance, though. I plan on watching the dub through next time I watch the series again.

Yes and thankyou RagedBear, my feelings exactly...but I'm not willing to give the dub any further try after hearing Osaka in particular...but that's just my point of view.

Oh, and I not dissing those people who like dubs or who like a particular dub for an anime...each to their own.

There are many dubs I like as well for different reasons.

Sorry dude, I didn't mean those were perfect. I meant the dubs I did like, sorry that was my fault the way I worded it. But I'll agree on what you said, some of the characters didn't fit. But I thought Satoko and the sisters did, and that's all I really cared about. Though, they did destroy Rena's "Take Home" qoute, I didn't like that one bit. :\ But I'm not mad, I actually agree on some of what you said. It's just a dub, nothing to get mad over. I still prefer subbed, more than dubbed. But I have to watch some dubs and see what I like since most my friends HATE watching subbed anime and only dubbed. They really love Higurashi, but they have to watch it in dub because they don't wanna read and watch, which I thought was a terrible excuse.

Yeah I have a buddy who is the same way he won't watch subs because he says "it hurts my eyes and the sentences go by too fast" which I find that hard to believe considering the fact that he has watched two shows subbed with me.

The dubbed version of Shin-chan isn't really a "dubbed" version of the show. It's more like they took the show, took all the dialogue out, and replaced it with offensive humor often found in Family Guy and similar shows.

It's basically what would happen if my friends and I got drunk, got some unsubbed anime, muted it, and made up our own script on the spot.

Now, the show can be funny, but it's not really fair to call it "Crayon Shin-chan" after so much has been changed. More like, "FUNimation writers get their chance to be comedians."

I'd say S-cry-ed and Outlaw star was done eons better than their counter parts.

Gungrave and Rahxephon being at most up to par with the sub, but not better.

I watch more dubs than I do subs for various reasons. I tend to like a lot of dubs, English is my only language so I'll usually choose English unless its a live-action foreign film which tend to not have good voice-overs, and I buy all of my anime I don't use fansubs. I notice a lot of people don't like the translations used in dubs but I don't think they get the intricacies of translating a language where some words simply don't translate and sentences also have to be shortened to fit the amount of time the mouth is moving and the on-screen action. As long as the same basic story elements are being presented I'm good to go.

Death Note (I take a chip.......and EAT IT!!!)
One Piece (the FUNimation re-dub is GREAT)

Least favorite:

Original One Piece dub
Original DBZ dub (they actually re-recorded all the voices for the season sets they put out now and they put the old music back in)
Sailor Moon

New DBZ dub? Old DBZ dub? I'm confused.

Is the old dub the one from when it first aired in America, where it stopped during the Ginyu fight? Is the new dub the one after it got really popular on Cartoon Network and they brought over the rest of the episodes? Or is there an even newer dub for the DVD sets?

I'm hoping the latter, because I really hated the dub once new episodes finally came over to America. Lame jokes were thrown in for no reason, most of the voices sounded horrible, and the American background music sucked balls. I actually preferred the original English dub of the show because the voices fit better; it was more fun to watch, even if most of the action was cut out.

There was a NEW dub that was done quite recently. There are season sets of the show being put out now, they are currently on season 7 (beginning of Buu Saga) and for each DVD set they added back in the old original music and re-recorded the dialogue and its a lot better. The re-recorded dialogue has never appeared on television.

That is AWESOME news! I've seen the season sets for sale, and the prices are pretty good. Knowing that the original music is in there, along with a new dub, makes me actually want to buy them. Thanks for the info.
