1. Clannad
2. Minami-ke
3. K-ON
4. Serial Experiments Lain
5. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
6. Shiki
7. Death Note
8. Elfen Lied
For manga it would be Claymore.
And many more, but those ones in particular stand out to me. Also, the Studio Ghibli films. As for the "why" part, they speak for themselves.
