Why do people hate Dubs so much..?

I don't know if it's been said since I care not to look but from the dubs that I did watch, while previously watching the subs, I noticed that more often than not, the change in dialogue somehow fucked up the original story somehow. And Engrish voices are annoying when they try to pronounce Japanese names. Oh god.

After looking through peoples reason on why they hate dubs, 50/50 of you gave valid reasons. However, the other 50 complained about extremely minor stuff and sounds extremely weeabooish. Like 'they don't sound like their original Character voice actor.' Of course they aren't because they are being voiced by somebody different in a different language too. or 'They don't pronounce japanese names right and it annoys me'. are you kidding me...? because they can't say a name right, this instantly means it's terrible..? now there are reasonable reasons like the dialogue altering/ruining the story or the dub voice actors have no passion in it what so ever and they're just looking for the next pay check. while there are voice actors that DO put in effort. Like Vic Mignogna, Klye Herbet (can be good when he wants to.), Sean Schemmel, the list goes on. People can have different opinions and tastes and i understand that, but it seems extremely pessimistic to say Most dubs, if not, ALL dubs as bad for things that aren't as bad as you make them out to be. Plus most hatred for dubs originated from 4Kids Americanization of Animes like One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon.

I do enjoy some dubs, particularly if the anime has a western influence (ie cowboy bebop) because, in my opinion at least, the japanese can't really pull off a voice thats suited to a character like that. However shows like K-ON, again in my opinion, the dubs are terrible.

I, for one, say that a major factor, although not the only one, that determines whether a dub is good or not, is the anime's actual setting.

Take, for instance, slice-of-life, high-school dramas, or typical Japanese anime like Lucky Star, Durarara!!, Bleach, and what not. Generally, these anime will have quite some usage of Japanese culture, honorifics and special terms like 'desu', 'itadakimasu' and 'wakarimasen', which WILL be difficult to translate to any other language. When dubbed, these WILL try to 'fix' them to make it suitable for international audiences, but in doing so, will remove a lot, if not all of the authenticity of the original dubbing.

However, when it comes to anime that take place in a more fantastical setting, or especially in a Western setting, like FMA, Baccano, Romeo x Juliet, Cowboy Bebop, and so on, Japanese terms and references may rarely be used. Because of that, it gets easier to dub them without losing too much appeal.

Plus, dubbing especially helps with anime Baccano and Romeo x Juliet, because the appropriate accents (though a little fake-sounding at times) can be implemented to ADD to the authenticity instead. Let's face it, when seeing a Mafia in action, that thick Brooklyn/Italian/whatever accent is practically half the appeal.

Personally, I grew up with dubs everywhere, so I don't mind them at all. They've become my default method of viewing anime. However, if I find that a dub is very bad, and takes away a lot of the effect of the anime, I switch to subs for that.

Like it was said above, it depends on the setting. I don't "hate" dubs but I tend to avoid them. And it doesn't only apply to anime, I like my big bang theory in english, not in french.

dubbing is a really mixed bag...i went from dubs to subs just to have a greater variety of anime at my disposal and looking back, some were alright while others were just awful...Tokyopop shouldn't be allowed to dub at all(Initial D)

It really depends on the dub you have great one such as cowboy bebop and flcl which I enjoyed more then the sub. And their are some terrible ones

So I just watched the first episode of The World God Only Knows, one of my favorite mangas and subsequently favorite animes, dubbed. Ugggg, I have to say I was pretty dissappointed, Chris Patton did a pretty good job as Keima, but Luci Christian as Elsie sounded way to much like Nagisa and was a bit whiney. As for Ayumi, the voice was all wrong, it's not because it didn't sound like Ayana Taketatsu's portrayal of her, it's because she sounded like she was 23 not 16. While it wasn't ear bleeding bad it really isn't helping me a whole lot.

2.Angel Beats Dub.... First sentence from Yurippe and it sounded too joyful for the situation. Dragon Ball....I dont even want to comment on anything related to it unless it's the original series, whether subbed or dubbed. Azumanga Daioh dub... First few sentences doesn't even convey the feelings of being late.First male character and he sounds like he sounds like a pussy that is PMS-ing

So basically, in short, you're just nitpicking the FUCK out of the dubs. 'Yuri sounded to cheerful in her first sentence'....'Azumanga did not have the right emotions'...I watched both versions of both of these animes, and quite frankly, Unless you were intentionally looking for faults (which you clearly did) It REALLY did not matter at all. Who the hell is going to care about a characters voice that will never be seen in the series again...? who else instantly said 'SHE SOUNDS TO HAPPY' in the first episode of Angel Beats..? It seems all you do is watch the first episode in dub, if not, the first 10 minutes of the dub and instantly gun it down.

It's not so much that I hate dubs personally, its just a lot of the time I feel that the subs get a lot more emotion put into them from the Japanese than the American. There are of course exceptions and every now and then you get a superb dub like Bebop or Baccano, its just much easier to pick up on the problems of a dub since its normally your native language and you're more keen to notice issues.

Because most dubs are worse then the original.

The voice actors in dubs often don't seem to care as much for the characters, or try to live into the role, they often lack passion and end up making a bad representation of the character.

But there are many amazing dubs, some which even surpasses the original japanese in my opinion.

Let's stop the arguement that you started right here.
There are good dubs and bad dubs....
I like my subs, you like your dubs.
They're still anime in a sense
You enjoy them your way and I enjoy them my way.

I absolutely agree with you. How well the dub does depends on how much work the people pot into it. I've seen some that are just complete shit while some are actually, what I thought, really good.
