Why do people hate on dubs so much?

I am legally blind but now I have a 24 in monitor the subs are not bad. When I had a smaller monitor dubbing was my priority.

Not always, but in most cases, this rule applies.

I'm perfectly fine with live action dubs to my language. It's good, various and some sound even better than original.

But for anime dub, well, it sucks all the time. All the series airing here are dubbed by 5 people (seriously, Naruto was dubbed with the same voice as Orochimaru, and this goes on in every series... that's not funny.) and there's no trace of any emotion.

It depends on the voice actors chosen to do the dubs. I've seen and heard many, and a lot of them were so bad that I couldn't continue watching. But the ones that have fitting voices, those ones are fine.

I just wish to add that if even one fairly major character is dubbed badly, it kind of ruins all the dubbing. Case in point, Code Geass. A generally well-done dub once you stop thinking Ichigo every time you hear Lelouch speak. But then you have Nunnally's horrible, awful voice, and, to a lesser extent, Kallen Kouzuki and Shirley were also bad. I never realized how much Nunnally talks until I watched the dub. It was a hurdle too great to leap over for hearing the good acting more than once.

A lot of anime fans hate on dubs because a lot of anime fans are close-minded, or weeaboos. People like that give real anime fans, like me, a bad name, and make us the butt of a joke.

I see a lot of users here that absolutely hate dubs and go to just posting, "DUBS SUCK, SUBS FTW" or something like that. There was a thread in the main page poll forums where you can find plenty of that.

And as I'm sure it's already been stated, dubs tend to do bad because of the lack of emotion and expression English VAs put into while voicing. But not all dubs suck and in fact there are plenty that are better than the original Japanese dub. A lot of dubs do well like Gundam 0083, Dragonball Z, GTO, and Golden Boy which I find is ONLY funny if it's in English dub. There are even times when they both are equal. But anyways, probably the biggest reason people go crucifying all dubs is because of the quality of the dub I suppose or at least that's how I see it.

You don't have to like dubs to support the American anime industry. DVDs do have subtitles and the original Japanese. It's not like you either like dubs and support the American industry or like subs and support pirating.

Anyways, the majority of dubs suck. That's why I dislike them. Some are good, but most aren't. A lot of reasons have been given already, but I'll throw one out I haven't seen yet - the dub script isn't the actual translation script. It's been changed so that the words fit the moving mouths of the characters. A translation is already a delicate thing, as Nash said, with some things lost simply because it is going from one language to another. Dubs take that delicate thing and toss it around, caring more about the English words matching the mouths than the actual translation.

Watch a English dub with the subtitles turned on, and you'll see a lot of differences. Sure, the main message may get across, but really, if you just wanted the main message, you could read a synopsis on the internet. Then, you could watch the show without any sound and roughly understand what is going on.

I also don't trust a lot of dub companies, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. Dubs have lied to us a lot of times, such as adding conversation where they should only be music. (Dragonball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh are the prime offenders of this that I know of.) When you're lied to, you get upset. It's only natural.

In short, I trust subbing (fansub or legitimate) more than dubbing. And it seems wrong, but I trust some fansub groups far more than some American companies. Whose version am I going to get, the group I trust to do a good job, or the company that's just trying to make money?

I dont hate dubs, as a mather of fact some english dubs are better then the original in my opinion, for example, i saw Black Lagoon recently and the dubs did go well with the characters.

There are good dubs that I like(Cromartie, ROD) however most of the time the voice failed to bring out the character that the voice actor are voicing, they change the music/soundtrack of the anime, replace the OP with some annoying techno/hiphop music, alter the animations especially when changing anime marketed at teenage to a kiddy anime which is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, the way things are said in a language really affects how you precieve it. With subbs you get the denotation of what they are saying and at the same time you get the connotation with the original language.

But not all dubbs are bad. Two I always point to are School Rumble and Shuffle!. I actually perfer these two dubbed over subbed because they have great voice acting.

I like the Authenticity of the original language. (Japanese!!!)

The only dubbed version I liked in an anime was Ouran High School Host Club.

That, and when the english try casting for little kids (say around 8 and younger) it always ends badly >.<

If you were to watch Hentai Dubbed, you will understand.

Sometimes I like dubs, like the G Gundam one. Because in the End of G Gundam...

How about the incompetent voice over technician. Probably does not really care on the timing but only the mass production deadline.

i think they lack emotion, they have the same cold voice even when there should be a motional filled scene...

4kids completely destroys any anime they get their hands on. I've watched Yu-Gi-Oh! in Japanese and after seeing that, I realized how such a great show was turned into absolute shit. I finally understood why people bashed on the series so much and the reason was 4kids.
