When you're famous or in a position of power, things you say or do have consequence that are out of your control, proportional to the amount of power or fame you have.
I don't think Miley is as influential as you're making her out to be. Hannah Montana is no longer airing, and anyone who watched that in its heyday is older and has probably moved on by now. Her last album flopped in the U.S,so while a lot of people know who she is i don't think her fanbase is all that large anymore.
That's why the President Obama can't just publicly announce he's actually the leader of Al Qaeda or accidentally launch all of our nukes (plot tweest). These people can't control the consequences of their speeches or actions, so instead they control their speeches or actions. This is what's called "responsibility".
There is a huge difference between being the President and being a entertainer. Obama's responsibility to others is in his job description. Miley only "responsibility" is to entertain. The only reason she has influence beyond that is because too many people worship celebrities as role models when that is not in their job description. And the sooner people let go of that, the better.
Also, instead of creating a new intellectual property, they decided to degrade a preexisting image. Sure Miley might've wanted to go in this direction herself (which is already telling, considering how she was a country-pop star before, which is pretty much the exact opposite of this), but you'd be kidding yourself if you think the people who produce her don't have direct supervision over her image and that everything needs to go through them first. Meaning, this wasn't just a whimsical decision to change herself, this was an intentional, deliberate, marketing plan.
Nearly every childstar goes through this. To beak out of their image they try to go as edgy as possible. Britney did it, Christina did it,Gomez did so acting wise by starring in Spring Breakers.
I feel like people here are acting shocked when this always happens.
Also, it's not like she's completely faultless for going along with this.
I wasn't trying to say she wasn't. Most likely she just wants to rebel hard because she had no freedom to as a teenager. And again, considering what has happened to other former child stars recently i don't think her actions are all that extreme.
As this article written by a former child star, Miley's behavior is nothing new. Also said article kind of summarizes why most child stars end up the way they do,so i think it is relevant here.
