That's a misconception that many people make. You burn the fat off and then build the muscle - there's no such thing as turning fat into muscle because that's biologically impossible.
Many fitness people don't believe in the word toning, but I think people get the general meaning of toning by burning fat while building some muscle at the same time. A person with my build, my excercise/work out regiment leans towards toning/bodybuilding simply because my asthma gets in the way of truly building a lean, thin body.
Here's another thing to consider - boxing. It's great for overall body fitness and extremely great at raising cardio as well as the added benefit of learning self-defense. No, I'm not talking about those tae-bo classes or some aerobics class that incorporates some martial arts because that's dumb. Sure, you'll burn the calories, but it's nothing like burning calories and learning how to defend yourself like boxing.
