Because this movie is fairly new, i'll make this spoiler-free.
It is set between the silent era and the dawn of the new sound-movies.
This movie shows emotions like no-other movie, you can really feel what the actors are feeling. And because it's a silent/black-white movie it really requires the actors to be top notch at body language. And they are fantastic, you can tell what they are saying just be looking at them.
So this is a french movie with french and american actors, and this really open up opportunities for foreign actors. Right now english speaking movies are (almost) always on top, because (mainly USA and UK) are too lazy to read subtitle and therefore they only watch english speaking movies. Of course this isn't the only reason.
George Valentin (played by Jean Dujardin, he even got a oscar for this role) is the star, everytime he's in screen you always look at him.
One thing that i saw very clearly in this was that this movie got charm. I was surprised by that, rarely do i think a movie is charming.
First time you watched this it feels weird without sound but you don't really bother 40 min in. And i forgot this movie was in black-white almost immediately.
Tl;dr Go watch this movie it's awesome 10/10!
