There's some interesting stuff here on Kasul-rahul's list of suggestions and if I may, I'd like to weigh in on some of them.
I'm Gonna Git You Sucka - this was a parody of blaxploitation films, and I intend to see it at some point given that I love me some blaxploitation. But I find it hard to believe that it would be anywhere near as good as Black Dynamite.
Friday - it's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember enjoying it.
Soul Men - I haven't seen it (haven't heard many good things about it either). I'm only weighing in here because for a second, I thought you were referring to Soul Man, that movie where C. Thomas Howell got into Harvard by pretending to be black.
Harlem Nights - I wouldn't call it a classic by any means, but I'd say it's a very underrated film. Eddie Murphy (before he gave up and started sucking) Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx... That's an awesome cast. Also, the look of the film was amazing.
The Sci-Fi films he recommended.
The Last Starfighter - Maybe it hasn't held up over the years, but it's still a classic eighties movie in my book.
Total Recall - Schwarzenegger at his best. Love it. Great science fiction mixed with awesome action cheese. An all around fun movie. (I'd also suggest another Arnold movie, The Running Man)
Tron - It's Tron. What else is there to say? I don't think it's a great movie, but I'd still consider it required watching.
Event Horizon - Complete and utter garbage. That being said, it's better than most movies made by it's director - Paul W.S. Anderson (the Resident Evil director).
Dune - A cult classic. I don't personally love it, but it's definately worth checking out.
The anime films he recommended.
Ninja Scroll - A kick ass action film. The fight scenes are amazing. I can't recommend it enough.
Fatal Fury - I've seen two of them - Fatal Fury The Hungry Wolf and Fatal Fury The Motion Picture. Neither is really any good at all, but The Hungry Wolf is a fast watch (like, 50 minutes I think) and it's pretty good as far as unintentional comedy goes.
Endless Waltz - I hate Gundam Wing with a fiery passion. But people who like it would probably enjoy this.
Death Race - I can't say I thought it was great, but it was sort of entertaining. There are tons of better Jason Statham movies out there. I would recommend the original 1975 Death Race 2000, though. Dave Carradine, Sly Stallone and lots of awesome b-movie goodness.
Big Trouble in Little China - an eighties classic. I won't call it brilliant, but it's certainly entertaining as all hell.
Top Gun - I wouldn't call it good, but I love it. It's stupid, cheesy and oh so eighties.
The Crow - A bit pretentious, but overall, a solid action film.
The Punisher - I liked both of the recent Punisher movies. I'm probably in the minority, though. I sort of want to see the one from the eighties with Dolph Lundgren.
Family movies he recommended
Short Circuit - Great film. The sequel is fantastic too.
I can't recommend Rashumon enough. Also, this is going a bit off topic, but most John Woo movies are fantastic - The Killer, Hardboiled, A Better Tomorrow, A Better Tomorrow II... Love that guy's work.
Horror films he recommended
Video Drome, Texas Chainsaw (the original at least) From Dusk Till Dawn and Aliens are all fantastic. Human Centipede was just stupid (not even funny stupid. It certainly wasn't disturbing. I want to know what eight year old thought that concept up. The mad scientist almost made it worth watching, though.) Cabin Fever and Hostel were dreadfully bad.
I haven't seen the romance movies he suggested, but if by 'What a Woman Wants,' he meant 'What Women Want,' I thought it was funny as hell.
You sir are awesome. thanks for the input on my list. I said I was born in the 80's and it shows in my movies. also I forgot to mention Lawerence Fishburn in "Hoodlum" for crime and drama.
