Atheism is a religion which probably upsets many atheists. Because most atheists I have argued with will go on and on about how logic and reason are better than a non-exsisting diety. I tell them that science is a religion. Look at it this way; all religions have places such as churches to worship their faith at and scientists have labs to practice their methods, almost every major religion has a central controling figure like the Pope and scientists have people like Stephen Hawking, every religion has a historic figure that paved the way for future generations like Jesus or Buddah and then science has people like Galileo. I think the problem with most people is that they view the term Atheism as somebody who does not believe, yet it is more of the religion of not having a religion.
By that logic gaming could also be a religion. We have a place of practice, we have our rituals and we have 'historical' figures such as Warren Spector.
a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny; "he lost his faith but not his morality"
an institution to express belief in a divine power; "he was raised in the Baptist religion"; "a member of his own faith contradicted him"

Wiki's definition of religion seems more in line with your logic.
A religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Unfortunately Atheism borders on becoming religion, based on how people bang on about it in the exact same fashion religious bible beaters do.
I believe that the Princeton wordnet definition is more accurate that Wiki's and we all know Wiki isn't the best of sources.
