Higgs Boson

So, they supposedly found what is regarded as 'the missing particle'.

The Higgs Boson is the particle which gives other particles their mass, in other words, the stem cells of particles!(err, technically) The beginning!

So, what are your thoughts on this discovery?

My HONEST opinion? It's a waste of money right now. We will say "Oh, cool!", but this will not change our lives.

If it has any use at all, it will be in our corrupt military. This is not a good thing!

YES ! I saw it on sixty symbol on youtube this afternoon , it's amazing ! I really love physics so i was so excited when i heard the news . Proving the higgs doesn't really change anything and will mostly not change our lives but it's another piece of the puzzle to understand how all the universe works !

Btw , the guy who we see crying in the video is mr.higgs , he must be so happy to see it from his living !

Im glad they discovered it (Whatever it is) because I believe that any new discovery or 'step foward' can only be a good thing.

Now all I need to know is what practical uses this discovery has (If any) so that we can make some money off this thing.

It doesn't have any practical uses , in fact we already knew it was there for 50 years , it was just not proven until now . All it does is confirm in which direction we must continue to look for to understand even more the universe .

Absolutly nothing , nor for the millitary since all we gained from it so far is more knowlege on how the universe works but knowlege is in my opinion something really important so i don't think it was a waste of money ...

That is IF the military can manipulate the particles into becoming mass thus manipulating the transformation into become a biological weapon capable of their bidding, which in my case will take more than "mere" years to even understand how they can manipulate the biological structure of the "missing particle".

One scientist created HAARP to manipulate the weather and helping dry lands become wet and and wet lands to become a little dry, however there is more than enough proof that the military got their hands on it .. so I won't be surprised if they got their hands on documented knowledge on how to manipulate particles into becoming mass.

However it is still exciting to understand how everything came to be, and the "missing" particle might be the key to the next step of knowledge, so it isn't ALL a waste of money, rather it was useful for the sole purpose of knowledge.

I mean, sure, there is always a danger of that. But I don't see anyone complaining about research into thermodynamics, when that has a much clearer military application. I don't see anyone complaining about invention of fire either, even though it can create fires and stuff, and kills people. The notion that all research of this kind (i.e the particle research at CERN) will be instantly turned into a WMD is more than a little retarded.

For one, if they really wanted to make this into a weapon, do you honestly think the research would be publicized? Or for that matter, would CERN be allowed to be a largely civilian institution?


Back on track, I think it's about time that physicians finally learn the basics of the laws of cosmos and what not. Maybe now we will be able to quantum-tunnel something bigger than a salt molecule.

It's like sending a space probe to explore outside our solar system. Sure, it's a great scientific feat, but it doesn't change things at home, and most cannot afford to appreciate it.

From my minimal understanding of this particle, it gives other particles mass. Though this discovery is only the first step, I believe it would allow us to 'create' new kinds of materials and such, or perhaps even re-create already existing materials by copying it's atomic structure. At least, that's what I think it would allow us to do?

In any case, that result won't happen for some time.

Seriously though, this is a good find but it has really no practical application in science right now. We just want to know more and more, but knowledge is only worth its weight in usefulness imo.

I'm pretty sure developing the newest 'atom-bomb' is not a good thing for the world, but whatever floats your boat.

Nuclear energy had non-violent purposes too, but if we look at history, politicians are more interested in weapons. As a believer in nuclear technology, I'm actually tired of bureaucrats misusing the science.

And Higgs Boson sounds more like nuclear energy each day. We merely need to look at the past to look at the future. I don't want to see another Hiroshima.

You really don't see how understanding of what makes everything around us up is not beneficial to society? Obviously governments and organizations see that CERN and related research is beneficial to humanity otherwise they wouldn't be funding billions into it? And i think they know a little bit more about human sociology than you guys do.

If i'm not mistaken other scientific discoveries and understandings, like the understanding of electromagnetic forces led to the creation of the microchip and most modern-day electronics? Or that Einsteins theory of relativity led to modern day satellites and GPS? Or that DNA led to medical advances in curing a multitude of diseases and physical defects? I'm sorry but how stupid are you to think this won't affect society?
