God's particle will and somehow become useful for scientific means.

Nothing in this world is a waste, everything has it's usefulness to someone for something.

That is what I also wanted to reply, scientists are not just your ordinary " Observation team", they literally try to find out what use this discovery will have in the future....

What you just said can't be explained anymore simpler than now, and if people don't understand that .. well then they can't understand such great discovery.

It also means re-creating resources that is important for lives in general, and even supporting structures that are unstable created from humans themselves. ( Wild Guess )

I'm not really sure, but what I think is it's just a waste of time and money.
It's the same as doing a research on the Sun. We gain knowledge from it, but that's as far as it go. Maybe creating a small scale of it, but the benefit we gain is not worth the money we spent.

I have a little story for you :

A storm just started , the 5 cavemen were wet and went into a cave to take cover . Suddenly a thunder stroke a tree and put fire to it .

One of them said : HUG GHA HAG BHA GHA ! (which meant ;i'm goign to see what it is )

Another one said : JABADA gHA BHA DHA JHA ! (which meant ; No don't do that , it's a waste , you're only gonna get more wet .)

On that day , because this guy didn't listen to the other guy , he discovered fire and it is for only one reason ; because he wanted to acquire knowledge , he was curious . It is our seek for knowledge that made us into this great specie that we are today . If it wasn't from that , we would still be cavemen picking our nose and today you say we should forget abouth that ? Forget our chase for the most important thing in the world , knowledge ?

If you still don't understand , see it like that , if we want to solve every problemes , we need to know everything . Then , the more we know , the more problemes we can solve .

I'm not saying that the higgs boson will be usefull , but until we live in a utopia , every knowledge is more valuable than all the gold in the world .

You have a point, while it's true, my point is, I'd rather do something more useful for the sake of the world, rather than keep going forward while leaving the rest of the world behind. Like, for example, trying to fix poverty. It's a big thing, but IMO rather than spending money on research, I'd rather do that.

I like your metaphor but it is wrong in one point ; the wounded guy is not my friend . Maybe i'm goign a bit too metaphorical here . What i mean is that my country isn't poor , i , the citizents of my country and my government do not give a fuck abouth other nations . And it's the same for every wealthy country . Because we are humans and humans are selfish by nature .

Every time I read one of your posts it seems like your ignorance grows tenfold.
You assert things like "it's a waste" or "we're never going to use it" like you can see the future or something.
You also assert that researching the sun has been a waste of time. Apparently understanding nuclear fusion, how solar flares affect us, or even the generation of solar power is a waste.

Regardless of the verbal fire that is currently being thrown around by our FAKKU counterparts, I for one am very excited at the prospect of the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The reason we put money into these things, which is insignificant in comparison to things like military spending, is to gain a greater understanding of the world around us. There are thousands of ways to implement a single idea to a plethora of issues, and I know I have no understanding of the fine details of the physics behind these particles. However, just because I don't understand or can not comprehend an immediate gain in my life through the discovery of an elementary particle which has the potential to close rifts in our current understanding of the universe doesn't mean I don't believe there will not be any within the eventual future. The point is, people once thought it was impossible to fly. People once thought we could never go to the moon. People once thought that the transmission of sound waves from one end of the earth to the other through an electrical signal was impossible. We have no idea where life is going to take us. Why shouldn't we be curious about it?

Exactly, because you don't give a fuck about other country, while the finding is useful later on, on the other hand it's a waste of money. Fine, if you wanna think that way, but it's not changing the fact that it is still a waste.

And humans CAN fix it, they just don't want to.

Dev, I know what you mean and I can't argue with what you have said ... however this discovery can mean in many things such as "understanding" how things really work and "finding out" how the "missing particle" can be of some use ....

One replied here that it can be used to copy the atomic structure of anything .. which means maybe there is a way to make more resources or "create" something useful ..... it might be something not worth looking at now but this search has costed a great amount of time and effort to discover it .. right now I bet the scientists are not sleeping at all, I bet you they are now having a conversation about hundreds and thousands of possibilities what they can do with it.

When you meant "it is just a waste" and "the world will end before we use it", clearly states that you haven't yet to realize how important it is not just for scientists, but what this potential this has to become useful for everyone on this planet.

And he is right, if that caveman would have listened to the other caveman then only God would have known what would happen to us.

Try to be a little positive about this and talk about it with some friends who know about it, who knows they might explain this to you in a much simpler term.

My answer would be no, why? ... because it serves me "personally" as a source of pleasure and grants me access to forums where I can freely express myself and have fun at looking a arts.

However it serves no purpose to helping humanity, but it serves me personally as a site of pleasure and lets me communicate with people around the world.

So basically nothing is a waste, if this particular subject serves as something useful for this particular person, then it is not a waste, because everything serves something useful to somebody.

However I don't disagree with your points of view.

With that said, there's still no telling whether they are new particles or the elusive higgs. We'll just have to wait and see.

If I explain why I think its a waste and why you think I act like I can see the future, you wouldn't believe me anyway so let's leave it at that. And it doesn't matter if you think my ignorance grows tenfold, I am not here to please you.

My question still remains, and a point people missed before: What about the economic crisis? That's the original reason why I said this would be useless at the moment outside military.

Anything done with the LHC is expensive, but the economy is getting worse by the day. Outside a military setting, can it be maintained once the economy hits the shitter? And will it benefit the public before we forget about it with other priorities?

That is what I was originally trying to say and ask. The LHC is expensive! Are we sure this will not be a waste without turning to a military setting?

How would you know unless you tried? Is it because it wouldn't make any logical sense? That's usually the main reason people don't even try.

The economy is already in the shitter. Technically, the LHC is currently a waste until a practical application of the knowledge gained there occurs. The issue here is all the people saying that it WILL be a waste like they've got a crystal ball on their desks or something.
If you think about it, finding the Higgs Boson is probably the least wasteful thing the LHC has done, since that's what it was made to do. What one considers waste is of course relative, but I wonder what everyone thought when they were starting up the LHC for the first time?

To put this into perspective; those of you who are claiming this discovery to be a waste are saying this because there is no immediate use?
Did you think we were just going to find some sort of magical particle which lets us 'play God'? Everything has a beginning, every ingenious invention you use today was once discovered in a less favourable state and was probably perceived as pointless at that time too.
Well, this is that beginning. We can't simply 'skip' to the maturity stage of it.

Lishy, you seem to be transfixed with this military dooms day over a particle which supposedly has no use to us, yet it has use in the military? Contradictory? As for the economy, the science department is entitled their fair share for new discoveries and such. Besides, if you really want to ramble on about the economy, have a word with the idiot who decided to remove the word 'obese' because people found it offensive-- that's for a different discussion however >_>
