Honest beliefs that left you Speechless?

[size=12]Alright, I was discussing with my friend, and we happened upon a discussion of things we have heard that left us, for a word "flabbergasted". The stories that this conversation dredged up were that of high school, freshman year. It was lunch, and I was in one of my teachers classrooms microwaving my meal, I was to watching my meal heat, force of habit i guess, when I hear from behind me "You shouldn't stand in front of that thing, it'll be the death of you." One of my classmates was waiting to cook her food too, I had chuckled and turned back to my food. Funny girl right? sense of humor and so forth, right? Wrong."seriously!" she says, and grabs me to pull me from in front of the machine. and she tells me, doesn't say, but tells me, and I quote-

"You fucking moron! Do you know how much radiation waves you're absorbing?"

I was stunned, and even worse, she.. ehem, "explained" how the microwave works. Apparently it generates these"radiation waves", which you can tell is happening because radiation waves make the vrrr sound (the sound the motor used to spin the plate), and that the older models don't have the metal mesh in it that "shields" us from the radiation rays.

I googled it and showed her how it actually works, she was less than pleased, And the worst part was her mother had told her that that was how it worked, the week before.

Hahaha. My mom always tells me weird stuff like that. I've learned over time just to ignore her.

What did she say when you showed her how wrong she was? Poor girl. :( At least, believing you were going to be harmed from these so-called "radiation waves", she was a nice person and wanted to keep you healthy/safe. Silver lining, my friend.

But yes, it is sad that people are so inclined to believe a lot of things without thinking about it or questioning it.

I agree with you there, but it hit me like a ton of bricks, and her attitude about it was a little frightening too, she wasn't sad or embarrassed even, she went from asking if I was mentally handicapped when I told her she was wrong, to mad at me for showing her she was wrong, and cussing out her mom on her cell phone. She scared me.

Oh, Lord.. That is scary. I hate when people don't even take into consideration that they may be wrong and instead insult the other person. 1. It makes you look like a condescending ass. 2. If you're wrong, you look like a dumbass. Either way, you're an ass. Why would she be mad at you for showing her she was wrong? Yes, you could've just shut up and not shown her, but I would've shoved it in her face too if she was calling me mentally handicapped.

I swear, my parents told me so many lies and wrong facts about life, just to minipulate me. It did not end well and still sometimes misconceptions will come up to this day. Kinda pisses me off when parents dont think and just tell their children about something they dont knoww about. Children take in everything like a spunge affter all.

Omg my mom always told me that when I microwave my food and look at how the plate of food revolve in circles in front of me and end up getting scolded.
I guess the science education they received in their times are not really accurate

Roughly a week before my eighteenth birthday, going to Barnes and nobles for a few hours of reading. Well im walking up to the entrance that has the starbucks in it (ohh! fancy!) and I see someone close enough so that when I open the door I can hold it open for them without a long pause(that makes it creepy.) So I do. Now what you would expect to happen is the women to enter the store, usually ignoring me or mumbling a thank you, but no, not today. I had, by accident or by others design, managed to hold the door open for a feminist, and not the normal, isn't a fucking bitch kind, I got the fucking Hitler Of feminazis.

So one second I'm holding the door open, the next Im getting yelled at by some bitch about How I was a chauvinistic pig, how my father was a sexist, my mother was tool, etc. I was stunned, thankfully her rant was long enough that I could form a rebuttal, which I was nice enough to voice to her, I believe it was somewhere along the lines of

"Shut the fuck up! I held the door open for you out of courtesy! I don't give a shit if you're a women, I hold the door open for everyone, its called manners but you don't know what those are do you, you're too busy "fighting Male Oppression" (I finger quoted at the bitch) to understand how much of a sexist cunt you're being!

"I'm not sexist, you are you piece of shit!"

"Oh REALLY! Who here bets that she would of cussed me out for holding the door open if I was a women?(thats right starbucks patrons, it on now) Oh thats right, SHE WOULDN'T, the usual thanks would be given, but HOLD THE PHONE! it was a man who held it open, god knows no one holds doors open to be courteous anymore! So instead of just walking into the store and not being a bitch, you just had to open your mouth and show everyone what a twat you are, thanks!Have a nice day!"

Went inside, got a starbucks (it was summer, yay frappes) and giggled at all the people mumbling about what a twat she was, etc etc. the girl who made my frappe gave it to me for free too! best day ever.

Religion in general, but the awe has passed.

It is a mystery how women become feminists. You handled that situation perfectly.

People back then needs an explanation for something to ease their curiosity.

Hmmm there are a few things that left me speechless...
First of all there was the belief of my former biology teacher, that if you want to use a projector for power point presentations, you have to shut down your laptop for 5 minutes, otherwise the display will go bad.
I stopped counting how often we tried to explain to him, that it was just putting in a plug and pressing FN + F5, but hell no, there is a monster that will destroy your monitor the moment you plug in the beamer.... yeah right.

Another nice one was a university companion of mine honestly believing, that when I used the remote desktop function to connect to my server I would be hacking it and I could be arrested for it. Upon explanation, that it is a normal program that comes with windows XP, Vista etc and that he could just check it upon his own PC if he wanted to, he claimed it would be a trojan from our university network and that everyone would be hacking him. Oh ye... the wonders of the modern tech and the magic of being able to use something else besides word, Firefox, excel and PowerPoint :P

The only time I was in a conversation where someone stated something and I was left speechless was my senior year in high school at lunch.

I was friends with this one Jehovah Witness, and she wasn't that bad. She didn't push her beliefs on anyone and she was a very kind girl.

Anyway, I got curious about her religion one day, silly me - and I asked her about why she doesn't celebrate holidays. The Christmas one made sense, I'll agree with the Christmas one - Christmas was originally a pagan holiday that was changed and there is no evidence Jesus was born on December 25th. In fact it's very unlikely.

Okay, so we started talking some more and I asked her about evolution - bad move.
There's no such thing as evolution she says.

I asked her what she thought of the cave drawings of people swimming in the middle of the Sahara desert and fish fossils being discovered there.

"God put them there"
"..wut?"
"God put them there, to test his followers"
"...."

Bahaha. That would've been my reaction. I don't know why, but whenever people say anything about "God did this blah blah to test his followers" it makes me angry. To me, the God of the Old Testament always seemed like a dictator.
