A few years ago when I was a Junior in HS and taking an auto-repair class, I was talking offhandedly to a girl in the class about something that eventually led to politics. I lambasted Bush for the usual rap, and she told me that regardless of whether he was a bad president or not, he deserved our support just because he was president.
Wow.
He cheats his way into the office, and royally fucks the nation up the ass, and she thinks he deserves our support?
Yeah...can't be friends with sheep...or conservatives. Both equally disgusting.

Of planes and trains:
Just remembered something from my neighbors. We were chatting about where who would go for the holidays and she said "I am going to fly to Berlin". On my question why she would bother flying etc when it was just about a 250km distance and a train would be much smoother she said." "Because flying is faster and thus better for the environment."
At that point my mind had a major problem and the famous 5 seconds of silence occurred followed by an relatively long drawn out "oooookaaaaaay" by me. All my explanations, that a train would be much better for the environment than a freaking aircraft lead to her counter "But trains run with coal and are always dirty."
At that point it should have been clear to me that it is was a lost cause, however I did try to explain to her that she should just take a look at the train depot and notice that trains run with electricity these days. All attempts however failed as she pointed out to me that in her favorite movies, the trains always used coal and were only there for romantic travels.
After that conversation I immediately ceased any communicative actions with her and prayed, that one day she would stand at a train crossing in her car and actually see a train.

Religion and cards:
Since the ancient times we always know: Religion, gambling and cards are something that should be kept away from each other. I learned that lesson the hard way aswell when I was on a trip overseeing several middle-school pupils with one of the supervisors from the local group organizing holidays for children (the job payed good! :P) The supervisor and me were playing cards on the train and as it is with kids, they like to watch. Oh why not we thought and just invited them to watch (and two of the to participate as they knew the game). In that moment a nun from the same compartment came flying towards our desk and started screaming into our ears if we were ridden by the devil, letting children watch our card game. Puzzled and pretty tired (we got up at 4.30 am in the morning), we glared up at the nun trying to decode her religious babbling and both of us having the phenomen known as "brainlag".
Quickly skipping through the options we had we decided on >>>ignore and continue playing<<< without saying anything to each other. However the moment I won I couldn't suppress a faint smile and before I knew it, got shaken pretty harshly by said nun. Being at the end of my patience I pretty much screamed "GET LOST YOUR ANNOYING!". However instead of backing down the nun screamed at me "HOW OFTEN DID YOU WIN?!! HOW OFTEN! DON'T YOU YOUNG PEOPLE KNOW THESE DAYS THAT IF YOU WIN 3 TIMES IN A ROW WITH CARDS YOU SUMMON A DEVIL?!!!"
The supervisor being quick witted called the ticket collector who got the nun moved into another department. However the comment by the nun is something that still makes me smile these days...

"Shut the fuck up! I held the door open for you out of courtesy! I don't give a shit if you're a women, I hold the door open for everyone, its called manners but you don't know what those are do you, you're too busy "fighting Male Oppression" (I finger quoted at the bitch) to understand how much of a sexist cunt you're being!

Went inside, got a starbucks (it was summer, yay frappes) and giggled at all the people mumbling about what a twat she was, etc etc. the girl who made my frappe gave it to me for free too! best day ever.

A wierd thing that happened to me was in school as well.
Junior year, i was buying my lunch from the caffeteria and was having the usual Chicken sandwitch, and fries with broccoli. When i was almost threw the line this girl behind me asked me what i thought i was doing. I, of course, said "no idea what?". So she begins to explaine to me the do's and don'ts of buying lunch. Apperently my lunch was bad because i had to many unhealthy food and only 1 healthy food. I just kinda nodded and went on. I go t threw the line and my day. The next day homecoming was announced and all that stuff ect ect. When the same girl came up to me and asked if i wanted to go with her. My first thought was "Hell no!" but i humored her and said "Sure". Heres the kicker. This wierd girl who explained to me what i should eat for my school lunch...is now my wife. I thought about that the other day and i just couldn't speak. My mouth felt dry and i couldn't say anything. I chuckled to myself after a while.

Meh, I haven't heard much shit, or I just forgot about it. The worst offender that I could recall would be this chick from my high school philosophy class who said something about everybody having a god inside them, and she said it with such sincerity that I still remember it to this day. It also didn't help having a credulous christian teacher.

I actually had to completely avoid the topic of the election with certain members of my family last year because of things like that.
That's not to say it's astoundingly stupid to have voted McCain; there are legit reasons to have not voted for Obama, but NO ONE in my ultra-christian-conservative family mentioned them, or probably even knew them.
It was always the "Hussein" thing, or, "Obama Biden, Osama Bin Laden. Too close for me." or, "Obama's a terrorist." or some such shit.
My brain actually stopped working for a few seconds the first time I heard some of these.

I've actually never been blown away by people's opinions. I think everyone has a right to believe what they do, even if it is contradictiory to what is mainstream. If the attitude or belief is REALLY out there, I am more curious as to how that person came to their beliefs or conclusions and why they think the way they do.

Thats a pretty mature way of looking at it. Unfortunately I usually can't understand what goes on in my mom's mind. Which is why I try to avoid having a serious, long conversation with her. Most of my arguments with her revolve around her misguided obsession with her religion. The biggest problems arise when she demonstrates hypocrisy of those teachings or simply abuses them. I remember one time I got into an argument with her because I refused to massage her feet. The conversation goes like so:
Mom: "Can you massage my feet"
Me: "(Lol) no"
Mom: "C'mon, my feet hurt"
Me: "Don't care, I don't ask you to massage my feet when they hurt."
Mom: "But you're my son"
Me: "So?"
Mom: "The bible says children must obey thy mother and father"
Me: "It's honor thy mother and father, not obey. I'm not your slave, so stop abusing the teachings."
Mom: "I'm not abusing the teachings, thats what it says."
Me: "Get the bible and read the verse again."

Me: "Hello?"
Mom: "God doesn't like it when kids don't obey their parents"

And the most foolish thing i have ever seen was when a friend of mine took over a belief... From a game.
Yes, a game. Fallout 3 to be exact. I do not know why or how, but he was suddenly HOLYLY convinced that atom bombs are sacred since they divide mini universums or something.
I tried to convince him that it was made up for religions sake which was obviously needed in the game.
However he definatly would not listen to my "blasphemy".
Afterwards I just humored him by laughing, mumbling something weird like: "All hail the atom" and walking away, fast.
