I used to be a Catholic, not very devout maybe, but still... I used to reject evolution, and so on...
Things started to change when I read for the first time the Bible - well, I started reading it, but never completed due to all the boring bits, like genealogies - and saw all the problems - moral and logical - with it and with god. I lost then most of my faith, and stopped following any official doctrine.
As time went on, I started to see the world with a different view - a view where god was less and less important. I started to try to think more rationally over things, I started to look out for lies, fallacies and the like. I started to love ALL of science. I saw how hypocrite most people are. I started to know more and more about how wrong this world is. I became more and more of a nihilist and atheist, and my pessimistic side worsened a lot. Basically I went from wide-eyed idealist to a mixture of idealist and cynic. I simply stopped "seeing" god in things.
-facepalm-
WHY DOES EVERY SINGLE ATHEIST THAT I RUN INTO SAY:
"i nevr red da baibul b4 and den hwen ai red it, ai faund owt dat gaad wuzent awlweiz kaind and 4gihving so dats hwai ai am n atheist."
THAT IS A STUPID ANSWER. I SUGGEST YOU GO GET THE HEBREW OLD TESTAMENT, A HEBREW TRANSLATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, LEARN HOW TO READ HEBREW, AND
THEN (ONLY THEN) MAKE YOUR DECISION.

If you base your beliefs on what your priest/abbot/friar etc. told you about the text, then you should be slapped in the face.
It is these people that confuse יהוה (Yahweh) and Yeshua (a.k.a. Yesu, Yesus, Iesu, Iesus, Jesu, Jesus), his son.
I'll give you folks a brief synopsis:
YAHWEH [name literally means "He who exists."]: The one who added life to (but not created, as most translations say) the Earth. He is VERY, VERY strict, not allow Moses, one who had served him throughout his entire life, into the Holy Land SIMPLY because he hit a rock with his staff instead of speaking to it. His name only appears once or twice in most translations of the Old Testament, his name being translated as a capitalised "lord" in every other instance because of ancient tradition banning the pronunciation of his name.
YESHUA OF NASH'RATH: Also known as "Jesus Christ", a translation of his title "Yeshua, the Messiah." He is the son of Yahweh, and the one who seemingly convinced his father to be more forgiving, and also died for the sins of man.
