I was raised in a near-fundamental church. For several years this church ruined my family and only left my father and I as the only ones who kept the faith. We moved, and went into a more moderate church which preached upon temperance, patience, good acts to ALL man and focusing on being a good person, rather than focusing on aspects of the bible.
My church was a pretty good one, it wasn't too imposed, and it didn't go out and snob on people's doors or privacy to just speak the word of god. It was pretty much a liberal thinking type of church, to where many aspects of the bible were questioned or evaluated.
I later enlisted in the Navy see the world, learn about people and see what I can do with myself. In the end of my service, I pretty much gave up many aspects of being a Christian and thus I no longer consider myself one. However I am not an Atheist.
I met a lot of atheist in the Navy, and they proved me two things. One, it's possible to live a great life without god. 2, they have are the most chaotic people I have ever met. When I mean chaotic, I mean it in the fullest sense, Atheist are dice roll when you meet them. They can either be the coolest cats in the world, or the biggest douche bags this side of the Mississippi river.
Suffice to say, I'm not an Atheist. To this day Atheist do not have a lot of the things that religion has. They don't have a rule book or even guideline to acting like an Atheist. You can act whatever you want as an atheist and no one will hate or sneer you for it. The focus of being an Atheist is believing in no higher power.
Yet the many arguments I heard from Atheist had harsh tones to them. They believe the church not as a source of philosophy, good people, or community, but as a prison for idiots. I never gotten that, until I looked further.
Atheist arguments on the 'church' were so general, that it was almost insulting. They would use the actions and philosophy of one denomination and apply this to the whole religion of Christianity, that's not only stupid, but close minded.
Furthermore Atheist kept on ranting on current ideas of the church and uses this form to argue against the religion. The bible was a very liberal, if not old text book that was translated thousands of times. Even in the church I was aware that taking the bible for what it said would just make you an idiot. We were careful in how to act and behave with people, the world, and the information we have saw. The bible studies I were in were actual bible studies, not bible circle jerks.
So Atheist raised questions, and I decided to look further, ask not just what Christianity is, but also of other religions and Science. I came to a conclusion that using Science to discover God was pointless, or at least with the methods I have seen presented to me.
Atheist presented good logic as to why a Christian God would not exist, but I never saw good arguments for just A God not to exist. Suffice that much of them are on the Christian God, Non-Abraham religions were ignored, it made me wonder how much did the average atheist do to investigate every religion, and not just the one they rejected.
I asked more questions about the nature of god, and that seemed to be debated. Within the Theist circle of belief, there are various forms of how one views god:
1. That God is a being of a higher plane of existence.
2. God is a being who resides in this plane but is untraceable.
3. God is infect the universe, and we are mere particles to God.
4. The universe are in fact the remnants of the body of God and thus we are part of him.
5. God is a mere agent of a higher power/Is the keeper of law of higher planes, thus regulating souls and reincarnation, as well as energy of lower planes.
I could go on, but you get the idea that just establishing WHAT a God is hard enough. To get everyone of this world to agree that one theoretical god exist and thus try to prove/disprove the existence of that one individual god was improbable. Hence I believe Atheism as an absolute is impossible for myself. I would need to agree and then disprove every single theory that is current in the world.
Does this mean that I am done with Atheism? No, it just means I have not accepted it yet. If an atheist comes to me and shows that there is no higher plane of existence, that all current theories of God/s is debunked, I will be an atheist. Until then, I am an Agnostic Theist.
I believe there is only so much knowledge we as humans can attain, no matter how vast there is to learn, even with tools to assist us in the unseen world, there is only so much we can view and even accept as reality. I don't remove god, I remove the philosophy of any of the current religions. I find that if there is a god, and he/she/it wants us to live a good life, this god would not impose the measures that many religions are doing.
I would also like to say that I am not implying people to leave their religion with my line of thinking. Religion is a good thing, it can bring happiness, peace, tranquility, and rules that allow people to go forward in their lives. Religion has reformed people for the better, as well as the worse. Religion is merely a tool, a tool that can help or destroy mankind. As such I do not hate Religion, only the people who misuse it.
The same goes for Atheist. If you can find happiness, freedom, and purpose in the chaotic universe, then do so. Many people have made individual philosophy that do not interfere with others, help people, as well as bring a sense of peace. Atheism is only the starting point of one's journey in life, not the end result nor the end club house. Atheism only questions the current truth, and for many people who have been abused by religion, this is a great idea to question yourself and the world.
If there is one thing I learned from my life is that keeping an open mind is one of the greatest tools that a person can learn. An open mind is ready to adjust when truth is current, destroy ideas when truth are shown to be lies.
