Why one should learn Japanese

This thread is for you that don't wanna learn another language other than English.

Following reasons made me write a post about this:

1. JAPAN - the place itself is full of the native tongue... And one should be able to cope with the language when you visit there, and yeah some might say "I'll just bring a translator with me" simple right?, but haven't you thought about "It might not be bad learn a thing or two" right?

2. Job placement - Well actually, some really wanted (including myself) to work in Japan because of different reasons, for me, because of the Games mostly... It would be nice to be the first to have the released goods rather than wait for it be exported globally ( which sometimes, fails to be released due to localization matters )

3. Games - Ever since I been a member of this site, I took interest for the things FAKKU have, starting from the doujin collections, up until the Visual Novel stuffs. The main problems is, not all stuff are english translated, which is quite a pain.

Yeah some users would be very generous to say "This game is not translated" or maybe " This game is translated by ~~~~~" like that.

Still I give sympathy to users mentioning "Is this game gonna get translated soon? Cause I cant read/understand japanese". Messages like these are answered by the generous users which goes like "NO" or the odds "Maybe" but not always "YES"...

So in the main reality most users here understand the fact that not anything is taken for granted, On the contrary, yeah thats true.

So the main point is why not learn it yourself? why not give yourself a challenge like other users here who really spend time to understand the language? Why not throw the reason "I'll just wait for translation patch or maybe someone would be kind enough to work his ass on this masterpiece." Sure it can shit to understand it, but it pays off you know.

You see, you can just search the web for tutorials or just ask someone you know to teach you how to learn japanese...

Someday I would like to translate a VN game, Manga with a project team or group, with me learning Japanese for about 2 years, thats all I could do maybe... As for you who is still hesitating taking the first step on learning, you could just imagine how many stuffs you could still be missing for the rest of your whole life.

Think its a "Serious" decision? Well yeah it is...

From this post, you're already try to convince only people who wants to learn Japanese. This made the whole thread is a waste of time for the most of the readers, assuming they already know what the benefits are from learning Japanese.

What YOU can do is, try to convince THOSE who don't wanna learn because they think that it's a waste of time and tell them WHY they should learn Japanese.

I totally agree. There have been times when I see raw mangas or doujinshis and I've always be wondering what they're saying. I can only pick out a few kanji and katakana, but it's hard to speak it! There's a difference between reading something and speaking it. A person can read the title 'Naruto Shippuden' but probably scratches their head at 'ナルト 疾風伝'! Not only that, but many phrases in japanese can mean the same thing, ie 'funny man' is the same kanji as 'to stab'! A number of different things can go wrong if you don't understand the language. I want to learn Japanese so that I can turn off my anime subs, but also fully understand my favorite Japanese songs without having to look at the English translations!

There are literally thousands of different languages and dialects in the world, so what makes Japanese a more enticing language? If your only argument involves having the ability to read manga, and understand VN's in their native language, then your topic is critically flawed.

I agree that if you are seeking a job in Japan then a concerted effort should be made to learn Japanese, out of simple respect for your host country. Does this mean everyone should learn it?

I heartily agree that learning more than one language is almost essential, in our ever-shrinking world, but is Japanese really the right choice for everyone, or just within the realm of Fakku forum readers?

I'm sorry, but your very first example is logically unsound. You basically tell people they should learn Japanese because Japan is full of people who speak Japanese. A true statement, but hardly relevant to your case.

I am not against learning Japanese, by any means, but I think if you intend to present your case within the Serious Discussion forum then you have to come up with a better thought out opening argument in favor of your position.

I do have one Japanese song down pat, I just need to remember the right kanji placings. It's Echoes by Universe by the way. I wanna learn faster so I can understand Cascade by Unlimits. Gotta love music, it's one the best ways to communicate with someone, ne?

I can speak Japanese, but I cannot read it. My listening skills are bad too.

How do people enjoy Kanji in games and doujins anyways? To me it's kinda like egyptian where kanji are simply symbols which mean things... So how exactly is it interpreted in speech?

I tried to be specific with topic, and I am very grateful for everyone giving their feedbacks upon the this post (including yours), So criticism is firmly implemented. With that said, I am just trying to offer advice to users who are bringing the thought of learning japanese than wait for somebody else to do it for them.

There is no intention of setting aside other languages, as of telling whether it is enticing or not.

And lastly, if you feel that my post was not as convincing and concisely done... Then I thank you for correcting my mistakes and it will greatly help me from making a much more neat, clear, and presentable post in the future...

Good point, In my opinion, "If you know it, then you appreciate it", knowing that you understand what it means gives you a better understanding of what you are doing... Its like reading a Comic book written in your language, and that gives you a full detail of the book...



setting aside the egyptian symbols, Kanji are chinese words, which are adapted from China, to the Japanese language, it is simply to shorten the writings into a single character...

Examples:



is おお.きい for "BIG", Where the single character above is the Kanji...

I'm currently teaching myself Japanese. I pretty much have Hiragana down, and I'm currently learning Katakana, then I'll move on to Kanji. The sentence structure is a pain in the ass. Verbs at the end of a sentence? My mind is blown, but I'll get used to it eventually.

Rather than learn it, I'd like to visit the place while holding a jap dictionary. Some sort of an adventure feel. You'd get lost, but that's part of the fun of touring the place.

Hmm, I never understood why people wouldn't learn it if they were genuinely interested in the culture, even if it is only a sub section of the culture such as music (Arashi, AKB48, Hikaru Utada, L'arc en Ciel) or something else like Anime, Games, and Eroge/visual novels. Same with other things like KPop, which I know for a fact my brother loves, yet has no interest in learning Korean.

I am in the middle of learning Japanese for a few reasons. One is my obvious love for anime, manga, games, and so on. Other reasons would be that things from Japan have been a part of my life FOREVER. Since I was a kid it was pokemon green version (original one), classic anime, Miyazaki films, and of course Japanese food (my favorite). And a few other things I don't even remember but my parents say it happened. Such as a childhood friend who was Japanese, sadly I don't even remember her lol. Though I apparently had lots of childhood friends that were girls I don't even remember.

Also, looking for a job in Japan doesn't look too bad. I get to be in a different place for once and explore, I also get new foods, new people to meet, and of course I can do this all while putting my future linguistics degree and Japanese minor to work lol. Besides that, Japanese is a fun language.

Of course I am talking about teaching English in Japan, it may not pay all that much but I think it would be a good experience. And for the record, I could care less about meeting girls there. To be honest I would think communication would be a problem in some situations. This could change but...I think it is far easier when both people speak the same language natively, in this case English.
