I don't know if it'll work for everyone, but if you learn Chinese and understand the language well enough, you'll have a high probability of finding it easier to learn other Asian languages that are derived from the Chinese language. This includes Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and etc.
I've read mangas as well as watched animes that are translated into Chinese, and in my opinion, the tone somehow stays true to that of the Japanese, more so than those translated into English and/or other languages.
Still, if it is only for the sake of understanding anime, manga, and games that are in Japanese, then perhaps it's best for one to learn Japanese straight away. Maybe the learning technique works both ways, but I have yet to hear someone say they find it easier to learn similar languages after learning Japanese first.
According to a certain someone on Fakku, learning Hiragana and Katakana and grammar rules only takes a few weeks while rough memorization of Kanji takes months. So if we learn Chinese first, we can pretty much skip out on the kanji since Chinese and Kanji have pretty much the same meaning just different pronunciation.
