The reason why I started thinking this is in the spoiler tag.
I was reading some hentai when I read one that disgusted me to no end (as well as horrified me a little). I'm not going to give the name of it because I don't want to subject anyone else to it; let's just say it was worse than demonic tentacles. I was raging over everything that happened in my head, when I thought "... and on top of all that, she was a virgin! God I hate this thing!" That's when it hit me; I know virginity is an important ideal to many people, but why should I be concerned about that when I should be more concerned about the poor girl who got plowed by... *shudder* I realize it's for shock value, but why does it shock?
So I wondered why virginity is still an important value. A few reasons I came up with were: 1) tradition (no sex before you get married); 2) health (you don't have any STD's so of course I'll have sex with you); 3) symbolism (you are so pure and innocent and if you loose it you are dirty and vile); and 4) social status (You lost yours at 13? Man, you're awesome!/You're 19 and you haven't lost your virginity yet? Man you're lame/a loser.). I don't agree with these reasons (especially #4 if only because of all the films about teenagers trying to loose theirs, even if it's a sub-plot).
I did get an unusual thought; I imagined a movement to fight against the idea of virginity and everything it stands for. Such a movement would be fighting against... humanity itself, I guess? And a world without virginity... I'm too tired right now to think about it.
That's enough rambling from me. Maybe I'm on to something or maybe I'm crazy. What are your thoughts?
