I'll give it a go, thanks for the tips. My problem is that when I transport my heavy arms units around the enemy areas, their tanks turn my poor little Izens into chunky salsa. I'll try to be a little more defensive.

Well that's why you fight in mountains and cities with Izen, so she doesn't get turned into playdo by armor.

5. After that finishes, do the exact same thing with the GadgetTrial En-Patch 20080419 Setup icon that you did in step 4 with the gtupdate icon.
6. Once that is done, create a shortcut on your desktop using the exe icon, or just launch it from the folder. ENJOY!
Now post some more strategies, this game is kicking my ass. :)

*After one hour and 24 minutes, along with repeated headbashes to his keyboard*
ARGH!! This fight is ridiculous. Stage 5 is just way too difficult. I managed to fight the enemy to a stand still in the west, but the amount of units they dish out is staggering. Never mind the fact that my tanks run outta juice because of the length of the stalemate. The amount of Black Heavy Arm Izens the baddies send through the mountains is endless because of the amount of deployment bases that they have. There were literally 10 Black Izens in the mountains and 6 tanks for me to contend with in the west, nevermind the assorted scouts and long range Yu-ri units. I tried running my Izens with the transport Souta units, but they are gangbanged the moment I deployed them, even when I use the mountains as defense. Maybe I need to focus on choking the enemy base in the center from the get go?
Why does the Black team start off with such an obscene advantage?

There's alot of trial & error in this game, or was for me anyway, where you have to play a map one or two times, trying out tactics, before comming up with something that works.
Belive me, i raged alot on some of these maps, but sooner or later you'll break through their offense and turn the tide.

The center is the key to victory, you HAVE to hold the thing for the economic advantage to kick in, but you also have to hold it in such a way that you're not operating at a loss (in other words, stranglehold them at the pass). Make sure all enemy infantry are wiped out before they cap any territories and take the factories ASAP, you need them churning out units fast to hold down the place. If you need to stall, never forget that you can copter block the paths so tanks can't come in (infantry can move over mountains so that point becomes moot, but then again infantry are easy to kill).
As to why they start with such an advantage:
1) The AI isn't really clever (once you go bomber strategy, you'll understand this)
2) If you read the story, the Blacks are the favorite child... kinda.
edit: what outfits are you using (include the bonuses and penalties as well, because I've forgotten what some of them do)?

Thanks for the tips, Sariour and KLoWn. After 30 minutes of torture, I finally managed to overcome the enemy. In the end, I had about 10 bombers all over the field, choking the resources out of the baddies. That was rough and I'm only on stage 5. :(

i love the story and characters there so much fun (the main especially) i wish there was more story and character development though (stage 9 now)
strategy wise this is very fun and very challenging but i still have mixed feelings about discarding my allies (used to no death victories when playing strategy games, such as fire emblem)

I like all the characters, though Izen kinda wins it for me as favorite gadget gal. She's just so goofy, you can't help but wonder what kind of antics she's going to put Major Mihara through next.
Still on stage 6 myself, I need to devote some time to the game, considering each stage takes me forever to tread through. I do feel bad, seeing all my little Izens get turned into human confetti whenever an enemy unit gets near them, but it's all for the greater good, hehe.

That's odd, if you downloaded both parts and unzipped them, there should be a MDF and MDS file both named GADGETT that you need to mount the game. If they aren't there, maybe your download got corrupted? Try re-downloading the game, those two files should be included with the translation pack and update pack.
