The day began slowly, a normal Valentines Day, noone gave me a rose, chocolate, or anything special. I was beginning to figure that he didn't like me that much. I shared a locker next to his, and my face turned red everytime he came near. However, he never noticed.
He walked into class behind me, books in his hand, keeping a comfortable distance between us. I would have much preferred him to be closer though. I sat down, third desk in the second row, and he took his seat, behind me and to the left one desk. I could feel his gaze at me, but was too embarassed to turn around and look at him. I ended up doing nothing as the announcements came on and we got out of our seats for the national anthem.
I whispered to my neighbour during the announcements, until a special one, different from all the usual sports crap, came on.
“Attention students, today is Valentine's Day as your know it. Now, we don't allow acts of affection during school hours, but today will be a different story. All the girls will be given a paper heart, which the teacher will hand out. If a girl talks to a guy, they must give their [paper] heart to him. If a guy gets 3 hearts, they can bring them to the office and redeem them for a prize. That is all.”
The announcements ended abruptly, and the teacher handed out the hearts. Immediately, the guys started talking to the girls as much as possible. He didn't try to talk to me though, he just sat at his desk waiting for class to begin.
First period ended without him saying a word, and I didn't see him until the end of the day. I was at my locker, and he walked up to his locker beside mine. There was a bit of a slouch in his step, as if he was dissapointed.
He grabbed his books, blushing, and left. Or so I thought, a minute later, he came back, and akwardly walked down the hall a bit, and turned around. Returning to his locker, he opened it up again, and grabbed his English books, which was stupid, because we didn't have homework today. I knew what he was trying to do though, and stopped what I was doing. I played with the paper heart in my pocket, still in perfect condition for him.
He finally turned to me, and shyly said, “Well... today was pretty stupid. That was probably the worst idea the school's had in a while.” His voice slightly trembled, he was obviously nervous.
I looked at his eyes, the way they seemed to draw in my gaze. “Well, that's just because you didn't try hard enough!” His eyes lit up. “Oops, guess I lost.” I let out a giggle, my face turned red.
He let out an akward laugh, before I finished, “Well, you can have my [paper] heart...” My voice weakened at the end, face turning red, as I pulled out the peice of paper in my pocket and extended my hand to him.
His face turned red as he began to stutter. “R-really?” I nodded. “Thanks... you have no clue how much this means to me...” I thought he would kiss me and confess right there. But he didn't. He took the heart, gently out of my hands, and I saw a tear swell up in his eye as he turned around. He slowly walked off, cheerfully, as I felt better, yet worse at the same time.
On the bus, Ethan pulled her heart out of his pocket, and looked at it all the way home. It had a single name on the front. “Kayla.” He whispered silently to himself. He flipped it over, on the back, there was a sentence, scribbled in small writing. “I've been waiting for this.” He'd missed his chance, and he'd never get it back.
