To tell you the truth.. i thought these were shit too. Bebop before rewatching it was ok.

But then again... those are my opinions and no one should care like wise.

in my opinion you shouldn't really compare different genre's there are some anime in the current season that are pretty good in their own right (Nikki is a good ex.) then there are some that target the otaku populace who worship K-ON so before comparing the classics with the modern you should see the genre of the anime to see if there was really much of a change between the old and the new

Angel beats is the embodiment of this thread, started so well. I had such high hopes..... then i got mashed last 6 episodes and a shitty ending. WTF is wrong with anime these days...

If your talking about romcom, comedy and echhi animes then I agree because most animes with those tags tend to go the same pathline and seeing it over and over again in different anime is like grinding in a mmorpg.

However if you're talking about fantasy/horror/pyschological/Pure drama romance and maybe tragedy animes then I disagree because from what I've seen and not just in anime but in j-television/movies is that they are really good at making horror and pyschological drama, even tragedy and romance (in anime and some in television)

So I guess the issue of anime becoming shitty really depends on the person watching and their views of what is shit, cause I know a friend who watch a lot of ecchi/romcom or just pure comedy without a story just because its "Fun" even though the settings and character behiavour tend to follow a similar pattern.

Though I can see the problem - Its like their running out of material. Just a few days ago I started watching DN Angel and Shaman king again just because I couldnt find any good one's.

Though currently the only anime I've truly found interesting and keep coming back is Nogizaka no haruka no himitsu and Zero no tsukaima and maybe Shakugan no shana. For manga its Pastel, Unbalance X Unbalance and Beelzebub.

I think it's fair to say that styles change, yes, so depending on your taste you can say one era's anime is better than another. Things move in cycles; perhaps after 'Madoka' we'll be seeing lots of depressing genre deconstructions like we did in the wake of 'Eva.' If you think this season's lot is subpar [which, yeah, IMO it is], wait a year or two, see if things change. It's worth pointing out, of course, that anime has been around for over fifty years, and will be around for a while until it gets totally destroyed by the Japanese economic/demographic collapse... which might not be too far away. In any case, it's also worth nothing that 'old-school' gateway shows like Bebop were popular in the West and introduced lots of people to anime because, stylistically, they were more accessible to a Western audience. They weren't representative of anime then just as they aren't representative now.

And for this apparent trend, I tend to watch only the best anime of a year. Over the years,i've noticed there are many,many Average-Joe anime among the precious gems, and choosing the best ones to watch can be a challenge. The overall reception of an anime is based solely on the viewer's standpoint. A "perfect" anime will not be loved by everyone,and not everyone will hate the "worst". I think it's actually the genre that matters. People who don't like one particular anime tend to dislike anime with similar characteristics. People who are mecha-junkies tend to watch,well,mecha anime,moe-freaks such as myself watch moe stuff and so on (I'm a fan of the "moe" look, not necessarily the fluffy stories that come with it)
I invite all who wish to see their own version of a great anime to become a mangaka,VN writer,or anything in between that can get your story told.

Anime has changed since I became a fan, Back in the day pretty much every anime you heard about was a instant classic from Evangelion to Cowboy Bebop, Trigun to Outlaw Star, Utena to Tenchi Muyo...the list was endless.
Nowadays its like looking for magic mushrooms, You have to sort though a lot of boring and terrible shit in order to find one decent series

When I think about it I too have noticed this. I kinda hopped on the anime wagon a little late. Saw FLCL on adult swim back when it 1st aired and was hooked.

but back on topic, I find myself not watching anime as much. I end up going through all the names of the new anime and just passing over them where as back when I 1st got into it it was as if every show was good just about. Might just be me getting older tho because I feel this way about alot of thing such as music, tv shows, western cartoons...

Well put it this way, lets look at a few of the newer anime in the past few years

Seikon No Qwaser - A dude who needs to drink fresh breast milk in order to fight evil
B Gata H Kei - A girl who has a wierd looking V-gina
Bra Chu - A group of high school girls create a after school club to help other girls to pick the right underwear

the list of this sort of anime is endless...

"Wtf manz this is shit bring back the old stuff, remember when anime was like cool?"
Something that is similar in some way to the old stuff appears, people go liek;
"Get original bitches you cant copy the old stuff forever, bring us something new"

And someone like me who just watches anime without whining is like;
"Dafaq! Decide already!"
