One question, do you all mind violence in a story or not? What's your limit?
For me, it is about execution. If a writer can execute it in a fashion that fits the context of his story and better yet build a sort of atmosphere with the violence in question, then by all means, I am for it. There is a distinct difference between a beating from a gang in the slums, to the psychopathic torture from a serial killer.
For me it is more about how meaningful it is, and what part does it play in a story. I think most of the people in the Lounge know that I prefer writing that goes to the point where I am given a glimpse of what the context and environment of the story are, who the characters are, what are their motivations as soon as I am done with the first chapter of the story.
So if violence has to be written in, it must expand on the plot and develop character.
It is also a matter of taste as well. Violence or the threat of it has been a very effective way to deal with dissent and end disputes. I feel that it is not too offensive especially if it chimes with reality. I tried to portray that in what I have written about hand chopping as a form of medieval punishment.
However, if you give me a piece of writing that is filled with needless vulgarities or even worse force me to read through a story that is centred on romance that appeals to adolescents, I will blanch.
