I remember watching a medieval torture show on history channel once. It started off with the classic torture of whipping and stretching the body. Progressed to throwing them in a rectangular box that was made just right so you couldn't lay down or sit up in it which broke your back, and then ended with pulling your arms out of your sockets and hanging you off the side of the castle into the moat and let you drown when high tide came in.

Also, the romans would put prisoners in a bronze bull, light a fire underneath it, and roast the prisoner alive. They put reeds in the nostrils of the bull so it sounded like a real bull to make it a little more entertaining. In essence it was a human pressure cooker. Ouch.
