It has always been an interesting concept to me. i've thought alot about the subject. i have some expieriance with it. two people i knew, and a few relatives of people i knew commited suicide. i was raised catholic, and to them suicide is a sin and keeps you from heaven. in many places it's a crime. some people say suicide is selfish, but three people i knew who had relatives who commited suicide were the most self centered people i've ever met. so much so that i could see suicide as preferable to having to live with them*. they acted like the motivation was just to hurt them. in japan, i believe, life insurance still pays off, but in the US suicide means fuck your survivors. even euthinasia or assisted suicide is a crime in many places. some places allow the terminaly ill to commit suicide, but no one can do it for them. so you better plan way ahead, because if your illness disables you, fuck you, suffer chump. this episode of FRONTLINE is about suicide tourists. i'm not suicidal or anything, but if i ever have a terminal disease that will result in much suffering, and/or excessive medical costs, i'm takin a dive.
most people won't even talk about suicide, so i often wonder how people realy feel about it.

As for how euthanasia is considered a form of suicide, I'm for it. I'd want, I'd expect, someone to pull the plug on me. I mean yeah, I really want to suffer till the end of my days with little to no chance of recovery. /sarcasm
As for suicide in general, I don't really have a firm opinion on the matter. It is a scapegoat, no beating around the bush on that subject, but each person has different circumstances. It isn't so easy to see suicide in black and white unless you are some kind of religious zealot.

Suicide is just another fact of life. Death doesn't faze me anymore. My real mom died when I was four and some friends committed suicide cause of a trauma we all went through. Suicide is just another fact of life. Death is death and nothing will bring back loved ones. So yeah Suicide and death they don't faze me no more.

Assisted suicide and euthanasia are still illegal in a lot of places. That's kinda lame. And in some ways that's violating peoples human rights, but as I know from experience, human rights are a joke.

I have a question.. what's the point of making suicide illegal? What are you going to do to that person after they're dead? Just seems kind of weird to me.
Anyway, for people taking a view on "suicide under any circumstance sends you straight to hell", does that mean the people who jumped off the buildings in 9/11 are going to hell? :/
I kind of understand how people can view suicide as selfish, but I don't agree. Yes, right before they commit suicide I doubt they're thinking of how much they are hurting the people around them. Most people who commit suicide are probably thinking that the people around them are better off with them dead.

Also, what if I told my family members that if some accident left me in a coma or forever incapacitated, I would want them to pull the plug. Does that count as suicide?

If by being alive, I cause lots of people I love to suffer, I'll kill myself. If I go to hell...well yeah might as well enjoy being tortured...

On topic (The following is not meant to be "emo"/attempting to be. Disregard my "twisted" thoughts.)
Coming from a guy whose emotions are outta whack, and who would've killed himself years ago if it were not for family, I say suicide is selfish. I don't think I'm very depressed, but I don't really enjoy living. With a lack of personal goals and aspirations, everything that I do is pretty much done for other people (mainly my mother, some other family members and few friends). Add that in with the fact that I have no social life outside of the internet.. and well, what is there that I live for? Pretty much nothing.
Life sucks, IMO. Anyway, because I have family I don't want to die just yet. This is where the selfishness bit comes into play. It would be selfish of me to say "I hate life, shit sucks, let me kill myself."
Why selfish?
Because despite how much I seem to have a distaste for my current life, it's not worth ending things over. I could work harder and fix the things that bother me with time and so can just about anyone else.
Putting aside myself, there is my family who would be ruined. What mother wants to lose a child and what young brother wants to lose his loved elder brother? Pretty much none. I am nearly 100% sure that if I killed myself, my mother and younger brother would be ruined. To kill myself would be fucked up and morally wrong for a number of reasons. It would be very inconsiderate of my family who has grown attached to me.
In my opinion.. The same goes for/can be applied to everyone else with a family, friends or anything else.
If you have no family, friends or anything that will miss you.. then sure, off yourself if you want. Otherwise, why do it? You'll be hurting someone deeply. That's pretty damn selfish, IMO. And don't forget that death is permanent.

People will continue to make their own choices, as they have been for millennia. I've talked more people out of it than people should have to deal with, but people will be people. It's their choice, what any one has to say about the subject in general is made null by the fact that they won't care what you think.
Personally, suicide has never been an issue. I think it's beneficial to have a healthy respect of death; to understand that this is all you've got, and you should enjoy it. But obsessing about how other people think of you is pointless if you aren't going to just enjoy yourself for who you are.

While I dont really have an opinion on the suicide of other people, since the reason they did it is their own, I have had my own experience with it...
I think around 2003 I decided to make a journal, of every day that passed that following year, I had some funny ass experineces actually, but thats not the point, I actually forgot the reason why, but I decided I wanted to die...
I took a piece of paper out of the notebook and had the suicide note written down and everything, all I can remember is that I had my uncle and grandma banging on my door trying to open it because my grandma "Heard me say something weird" and I was on the middle of my room on the floor crying...
I dont think that story had much of a point actually, just trying to point out MY understanding of suicide, and that is, when your life sucks to the fullest and you just CANT take any other shit anymore, you think suicide will be the only way out...
Of course Im just talking about the "normal" people who commit suicide, not the like terminal patients...
I dont remember what it is that made me not kill myself, but if I ever look through the book again I be reminded what that one missing page was...

Well, it's like that one story of the survivors who jumped off of the Golden Gate bridge. All of them came to the same conclusion. Each of the problems they had in life weren't worth killing themselves over, and they could be solved. Except one, they just jumped off a fucking bridge.
Case in point here, I honestly believe it is the easy way out. If something is truly bothering you that much, then man up and fight through it.

Me, I find it to be my own business whether I chose to live or die. Who has the right to force me to live, when I, the actual person that matter, do not want to? That's just stupid.
I find it the same with the fact that you'd be "selfish" if you took your own life. It's like "oh, I'm sorry, I will continue to suffer so much that I actually Want to die just so that you won't be sad for half a year and then forget about me". Nah, if that is selfish, then so be it.

For me i guess it's not really a big deal. People who commit suicide are people how doesn't have life and doesn't have dreams to fulfill. On the religious aspects they say that anyone who will commit suicide will go straight to hell..

My motive for making this thread was to hear other peoples opinions. thanks guys. it's such a taboo subject that people only talk about it if it happens. even then, most people just say shit like 'well that sucks', or pretend they cared.
i guy i used to hang out with in highschool killed himself aroun my 3rd year. he wasn't like a good friend, but more than just an aquaintence. we were both part of the same 'outsider' set, so we were frequently in the same places.
i was going to go to the funeral, but when i got there, most of the school was there. even people who would harass our group. i'd guess about 90% of the people there had never even heard his name before. it became this twisted social event. i remember being pissed how people were acting like it affected them when they never even met him.
bit of a rant, but anyway, i still wonder about that japanese insurance thing. anyone know if it's true?
