Which is better, believing in a god or not?

I'm a Catholic and believe in God. If you don't believe in something then what do you look forward to in life? You don't necessarily have to believe in a deity or something along those lines but in terms of people saying they need proof then what good is knowing what is after it all. That is what faith and believing in something in just like the same with a dream or goal. Thats my take at least and I hope y'all appreciate it.

I have no right to tell you what religion you should follow if any at all.
However I will tell you my opinion on the fact since you need help.
I am christian and I do believe in God, however I have had some of the same problems as you [but I never gave up on my faith (not saying you did)] but my reason for believing in God is more of a selfish reason and that is I want to believe in God and a better place after death. I would like to believe that after I die my body will not just rot in the ground that I would go up to heaven and enjoy ever lasting peace (you know until Satan makes his move); another reason is I one of those people who like to help but feel like getting rewarded for their help (I do not expect it nor do I require it to help someone) but I would like to know that my kindness is not falling on deft ears and blind eyes.
In short it makes life a hell of lot easier to live when you believe in something.
But that is my opinion. I hope you find it useful.

I have been a nihilist for quite a while now even though like you I grew up in a roman catholic home and setting. If you don't know how a person can have morality, happiness, etc. without religion I would suggest you visit the church of reality.(http://www.churchofreality.org/wisdom/) I have been a member there for some time ,and even though I do not agree with 100% of the things they say, they are a good source of wisdom for the budding atheist.

Weird as it may be, I believe in God because I enjoy the thought that maybe someone is watching me at all times (I think I worded that wrong) which means that someone is going to see all the bad BAAAAAD things I do. That makes it easier for me to set rules and standards for myself, because maybe, just MAYBE, I might get punished after the computer that is my brain crashes one day for all the bad things I did.
I think I will mention that I snap at people less and act more like a respectful human being when wearing a crucifix, no idea why, could be a subconscious thing. Anyhow...back on topic, in my opinion if you like to set rules and standards for yourself, believing in God will give you a feel that someone is also enforcing the rules, which isn't bad at all, most of the times.

A lot of powerful people in history believed God was on their side and got stuff done. I think believing in God or something gives you confidence and reassurance. Some people need it, some people don’t. I think it depends on how you live and your situation. If I lived in a war zone or was a soldier in WW2 you bet I would have a rosary in my hand and pray every day. I personally was raised Roman Catholic but my parents weren’t very religious so neither was I. But it gave me a conscience. “It’s important to feel guilty. Otherwise, you’re capable of terrible things”.

God is just a figure of nothingness it's was meant to keep us focus but if we think it that way can we not say that human can also be made as a figure of gods it self? as for today there were many artist that the follower can rival the follower of god with this can we not say that human itself are god? just think like this, look at the mirror for about 45 second and say anything, like have a talk with yourself on the other side of the mirror then say something that can be consider as a pray but this time not to god but to your other self, by doing this you have made yourself a God.
To believe or not to me are just crazy, why should i believe God since GOds or whatever it is did nothing to gain my trust? what have he did feed me? no i work my farm grow my crops and eat them.
For good harvest? no it's because i work hard to ensure the land fertile enough to grow crops.
For health? shit! i go to the clinic when i sick the doctor gave the medicine not gods.
knowledge? Fuck! i learn myself from the school and other people.
From this i think it's clear that we don't have to believe in gods or what soever if you want you can pray to me to have good fortune. Who knows i will be the gods itself...

Neither is better or worse. The best part is having the choice in what to believe or not to believe in.

Like what M.R.W. said, none are better or worse, although, I've seen people who've had their lives destroyed and never tried to get back up again because of their desperate belief that they will have everything they need in Heaven. I, myself, am Atheist and I don't think there's anything wrong with either choice, although like I stated just now, some people are so dependent on their God that they don't try to succeed themselves. However same thing with non-believers, there are some who just lack motivation due to their lack of belief.

If you don't believe in a god in the first place, it might be alright not to believe then. But as for where you're putting your faith to, maybe in philosophy.

I believe it is better to believe in a God. What is there to lose in believing? There is no scientific proof to say that he does not exists. I like philosophy because it helps the individual think deeply about whether they want to believe or not. What is the harm of taking the teachings handed down to us and using it to become better people. Most of the negativity in the world is going against those teachings. We are inclined to make our own decisions and live life however we want. It's better to understand that 'something' started where we are today. I don't believe anything can be created from nothing.

But, if it gets to the point where you're on doubt, it's because you lost faith, the point where you should not stop believing, but start looking around for more options, and once you're satisfied, decide on your own. I would LOVE to write and write about this topic, but to make it simple, easy and concrete, this is what I have to say. Good luck. Looks like you'll need it.

God for me is simply what people want to cling to so that they won't kill themselves from pain. God is a figurehead of what people WANT to happen so that there isn't anything to be afraid of when they die.

you know, your question sounds as if it's easy to decide to believe or not in God, it's not like deciding between a white or a red shirt, if you don't believe in him it's very difficult you change your way of thinking, it took you all the years in your life until now for you not to believe in God.
To me believing in God is something so personal that the expirience itself is defferent between different people, so as it can make you better it also can make you a worse person, so saying that believing in god it's better cause it makes you a better person is not valid (I can still remember some church-goers being total hypocrits, or others that were totally good people)
I don't go to church and am actuallyin this kind of crisis, and don't know what to believe. if in the end I turn to not believing, I will be sure that the morals and ethics that I learned are gonna stay with me and that is good enough for me

I'm one of those hater atheists who try to get others to know (note that I didn't say "believe", sorry, it's the kind of guy I am... =/) that there is no god. That said, I'm a Sun Worshipper, due to the fact that I'm weak, and actually needed something to believe in. Still, I can actually see the sun, I thank it for all it has given me, and I don't see it as a god, and I don't ask favors of it (or as those in church call it: praying).
So, anyways, to answer the question, it's better to follow your own ideals and try not to rely on a "divine entity".

I don't belive in any god, I think that we evolved (in other words, the Darwin theory).
But anyways... I think (this is my opinion, bear with me on this one) that we all are just afraid of dying, that's why religion have come. Because, think about in this way. When you were a child, then you did probably loads of stuff, just to show you parents it, because you wanted somebody to know that you are there, and that you are happy because somebody are looking after you. But I think that this dosn't change even when you have grown up, you are afraid to be alone, and want somebody to know that you are there, or atleast miss you if you die. So there we got god, the almigthy watching over us.
Religion is just a "Fairy Tail" (yes, i did it, i said "tail" instead of "tale"), let's face it, I am not praying or anything, and look at me, I am doing great, live in a good country and I have my health, and I have enough founds to get trough life without worrying too much. And when something bad happends, I get trough it somehow, but the religious people, I think starts praying if something bad happends, and most of the time, that's probably the only thing they do, and that won't solve anything. So in other words, they still die like anybody else, because there is no such thing as god... Maybe it exist aliens, but god, oh, no no no...
Ok, I am not quite sure where I was going with that, but try to see it in the whole.
If I was going to pick a religion that is the kindest, or most trustworthy, I would have picked Buddhism, because they have a quite good prespective on live as we know it, and the religion isn't like christianity, in the way that it seems to force you in beliving, the christianity havn't brought any good with it, just look at the crusades, it was Raping, Plundering and Burning Crusade. So I kinda get the feeling about the church is just a way to get income, and they are all afraid of dying, because... I mean, look at them, for christ sake, they are wearing thoose gold dresses and sitting behind bullet proof glass. It's like if they was thinking this: "Oh! Here comes the Apocalypse, HURRY put on the gold hat!" I u see what I mean.
But anyways... I would say that, if you are not mentally prepared to be afraid, alone and starting to see the facts, of what is going on in this world, then I would rather belive in something that can give me hope of enthernal life then not beliving in anything. Hope this helps @godotccf :)
PS. I am actually the kind of person that would talk against religion in the whole, but mostly christianity, because of the things they have done. AND, when I talked about the crusades, don't say "oh, but HOTD_Cum_Back it was the muslims fault!" Shut up! It is not how it went, and you know it! It is because of thoose damn knigths, that was figthing for a "good cause"... My ass! Also I am the kind of guy that, in case I would get the diagnos "cancer" then I would have tried to take with me the pope in the grave.
