Check to see if the game is already installed, I had a similar problem where it wouldn't act properly because I had the game already installed. If it is then un-install it and try the patch I linked to earlier, just the patch itself and no extra files. If the game isn't installed already then starting up the patch should give you a message saying MuvLuv was not found on your hard drive and it will ask if you want to install the game directly.

It's the only one I found on Amaterasu (ver 1.0 as far as I know). And no, I didn't try to install with the game mounted, woops :P .
I'll retry again and see what happens.

Yep, that's the patch I have. Oh well, I installed Alternative without problems and it works fine, so only thing left is to try and re-install the original MuvLuv and see if something changes =P.
BTW, I noticed that in the patched Alternative folder there are three text files: one is the translation of a song, and the other two apparently are translations of parts of the game. Does this mean that the game is partially untranslated? Or am I missing something?

Just finished Alternative. Damn, what an epic ride. "A story of love and HOT BLOODED PASSIONATE COURAGE!" indeed!
I also loved the realism behind the TSF's, and how the game portrayed the difficulties in actually piloting giant mecha. AND IT'S POSSIBLE TO KICK ASS WITH A "GRUNT" UNIT!!! XD

^ Well yeah I love all things mecha anyway, and the TSF designs are on top of my list especially the Shiranui.
Yes, I was referring to the Fubuki as a "grunt" unit XD, though you do have very valid points for it being a high spec unit for something used mainly in training exercises, incidentally I also regard the Gekishins as "grunts". You can blame it on Gundam why I classify mecha as "grunts" or "high tier" XD
And yes, of course piloting skills have lot to do with it...Well I think we all know about Char Aznable XD

As always the last one to cross the line, but I finally finished Muv-Luv Extra, all routes cleared. To be honest, it's been a while since I appreciated a "vanilla" visual novel this much, though there were moments that were downright boring (ok, most of the crazy stuff was hilarious, but certain things were incredibly annoying =|).

Are there any translations for the non-subtitles speeches in alternative? The patch gave me a translation for the coup d'etat ending speech, but claims everything else is just meaningless background noise.
Then a few minutes later there's a similar long speech at the graduation ceremony, but no translation for it. I also want to know what Yuuko says to Marimo before the final mission, as well as the conversation at the end of the game.

Man I'm glad i played this VN, i didn't really know what to expect and i didn't try to play it after extra got translated but since a lot of pll talked that it was really good i decided to play it after Alternative got translated and it really was one of the best or maybe the best I've played so far since i only play translated ones, the game really didn't allow for much "fantasy" or "super powered robots" that allow for everyone to live and instead stayed close to "reality".
Some of the things i didn't like was how some of the battles were animated, something i just totally got lost on what was going on.
The ending wasn't bad but i think it kinda ended in a bad spot xD
I actually started playing Alternative directly but i don't really think I've missed much but i guess ill still play extra and unlimited.
Also I've seen that there is going to be an anime version of the Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse novel. I haven't found any but if there is a thread about it already then ignore this.

Alternative was certainly a ride but like a review I read it does drag on and on with explanations and other things. What comes to mind is the escort chapter.
Though enjoyable, I think they could squeeze another game with the extra route in where Takeru is called back because of his child wanting him. Heh would be pretty neat if they made another game based on the concept of a girl popping into his life as his daughter and the girls see her as the same (Except the ones that didnt sleep with him in Extra)
