I don't like the idea of two or more series being pit against each other but I guess I'd join along with this...
Overall Production: DN is like the anime of the year for 2 consecutive years! (2006-07)
* MadHouse > Gainax - MH, time and time again has shown their versatility in adapting any material into motion. Gx however... no comment; the way they ended Karekano was a slap in the face. It's been so long that I still haven't gotten over it! (it has nothing to do with the topic however)
Animation: GL - out of all Gx prodiuctions, this is their best and last, meaning to say that the quality of this series will never be duplicated ever again. (so I handed it over to them, not because DN is inferior)
Music: TIE - the difference in genres made it tough to decide...
Story/Plot: DN - The Tool that can make you GOD.
Originality: DN - GL may be one of its kind but Mechas aren't exactly new, are they? Death notes are.
Characters: GL - I admire KIRA/LIGHT a lot but YOKO and NIA (together) is simply way too much to handle.
Transition/Consistency from beginning to end: TIE - though leaning quite a bit towards GL. [FUCK YOU NATE RIVER! (Near)]
Ending: GL - DN definitely lost in that department; way too subtle, making up for a less fitting end. (I LOVE YOU NIA!)
Entertainment/Intrigue/Eagerness to watch: DN - always leaves you hanging off the edge of your seat.
Hentai material: GL - I just had to say that. :D
Director's Cut Rewrite 1&2 vs Guren-hen/Ragan-hen: DN - the scene where Light (
ORZ) was literally defiling and mocking L six feet under the grave was beyond words to describe... speaking of which, I haven't seen
R2: L's Successors, yet... downloading it now! :D (Guren-hen wasn't that bad at all)
So with that,
DEATH NOTE FUCKIN' WINS! Gurren Lagann was no doubt of high caliber but it only had a simplistic plot that the majority of young viewers could easily understand; mixed together with over-the-top mecha action sequences... which obviously ain't worth anything much for me. But this is only MY opinion of course.
ed: almost forgot about the...
Seiyuus/(JAP)Voice Actors: DN - Mamoru Miyano must most definitely be mentioned for doing a spectacular job of portraying KIRA's character. While I'm not saying that Tetsuya Kakihara did terribly as Simon, what he did (imo) was just more of shouting and less of acting.
