Lol, don't get me wrong, I'm definitely with you when you say that people are making a big deal out of nothing (recall my debate with g-money). I know an easy solution to the circle jerking would be an intervention of a mod/admin. Just saying your argument seems to prove their point if you say, "who cares?"

He had a point but sadly that point was meant for another conversation. The topic I was attacking is the "consequences of +rep" but he was talking about adding -rep into the convo. Unless the current topic is resolved I rather not dive in another one which might just eclipse my other points don't you agree?

@PD- good job on seeing the irony I was subconsciously showing. As you said they have this "who cares?" attitude and yet they talk about "the value of rep" and in reality they make a big deal about it by whining so much.

What I am saying is not to ignore the problems but also not to magnify what's a little negative thus also ruining what's positive. Because I see it people just look at the negative side of rep but did not consider the positive side at all. They magnified the little stain and covered the whole thing.

You're avoiding the point he made... when people give rep to a friend for "fun" it devalues to rep that uploaders and people who contribute a great deal receive. I've seen people with rep upwards of 100 from friends while uploaders stay in the mid 50's. Do you see what I am saying? Older user generally only give rep when it's necessary, the new generation simply give it to a friend. Your argument is that it's none of their business but the wellbeing and value of rep is precisly what this thread is all about... G-Money who had valid points in his recent rep thread was simply asking the users of fakku to consider their reasoning when giving and removing rep, even if it did turn into a whinefest about lol12.



no, you and he are talking about the same thing... this entire conversation is about +rep and where it's being abused.

It's not that what he said was an insult but rather it was a statement that did not help the topic at all.

Anyway I understand your point but tell me will you deprive the uploaders who gain rep through hardwork just because of a few people who misinterpret the value of rep? Like I said before, it's becoming more and more apparent that users just look at the negative side while in truth rep has so much more to give.

I believe we can find a workable alternative to the rep system which can limit abuses and still promote the sharing of ideas and files.

edit: an example of which would be to only allow moderators to give rep, I'm sure as klown is perfectly able to give rep as he patrols that area we would not have to worry about it, perhaps users could request rep and the staff member could "ok it", both are reasonable alternatives which don't place any responsibility into the hands of children.

This is true we can have a thankyou system which was raised before. But let us not forget rep does not only serve to motivate uploaders but they also motivate normal users to post threads, images etc. that benefit the forum. Which means we have to come up with a system that will substitute rep for that as well which is fine. But this will take time which we could have used in thinking of ways to make the site more successful. Honestly the rep system problem is too small compared to other forum problems.

@TMS- I meant your "new age user comment". It was totally irrelevant and do not help the topic at all.

Yes I just read it. That indeed is a workable solution. But it's the normal users who download these uploads and it's their opinion about the uploads that should decide if it's rep worthy or not (if an upload has virus i really do not see it as rep worthy). Also this will not suffice for normal users who post noteworthy things that deserve rep.

If you mean that admins and moderators have to approve a rep action first then it's entirely different. A good solution but our admins might get bored checking all rep actions first since hundreds of people give rep or -rep away in just a single day.

I honestly believe the staff would be willing to do it; I'm sure if we brought it up to jake. Also, let's be honest viruses don't last long on fakku; Klown has that section down pretty tight.

Yes let's see if it will work. You can never know until you actually try something out. In that note I end my part. Not much less to discuss if we both agree that the rep system is still something worth saving rather than completely obliterating.

The best alternative I was able to come up with is to make rep much rarer. Make it recharge only once a week. In my opinion this would make rep a lot more valuable, and would force users to think before handing out rep unconsciously.

i think people are more likely to make multiple accounts if rep were more rare.

Up the required post count for rep. In my opinion it would seriously deter a lot of users who will want to abuse rep.
